(Keywords: perf, Whiteboard: [closeme 2024-09-20])
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/128.0
Steps to reproduce:
Thunderbird upgraded on its own to the latest Beta after a restart.
Actual results:
Since the update, Thunderbird freezes all the time, especially when new messages are coming in. After I "repaired" a folder, the messages are now shown in plain HTML. The program is unusable that way!
Expected results:
A properly working program.
I just took a closer look: The mails in that folder are now completely destroyed. The text that is shown is either HTML, but it's not the text that corresponds to the title of the email that should be shown, or it is a one liner that seems to be related to Thunderbird's way of storing data.
Since this is email account of my own company, this is quite a desaster.

POP account?
Is Thunderbird a 32bit build, or 64bit?

Which beta version is this?
Where can I find the version number? I searched, and eventually gave up.
I'm on 64 Bit.
A lot of old emails are totally blank now (no text whatsoever), and the latest mails have content from 2014, but in plain HTML.
Is there a way to restore the account / inbox folder? I don't have a manually made backup, but maybe there's an internal backup, a bit like the "restore last session" feature in Firefox?

See Help | About
There is no internal backup, though depending on your settings the mails may still be on the server.
Thank you! I don't store my mails on the server, they get deleted after download.
The references are totally screwed up. A mail from two days ago shows content from 2014 (but not the content it should), etc.
Can the referencing be fixed?

Thunderbird is actually 32 bit, though the computer is 64 bit.
Version 129.0beta
Repairing the folder caused the screwed up references.
Repairing it again made it worse - the latest emails now also show content from 2014, whereas before they came in correctly.

Probably then this is bug 1911076

Thank you! So would installing the 64 bit version solve the problem?
I don't understand everything in that other thread.

Sorry, I have read that whole thread, but I don't see what I need to do in order to solve the problem. Could you please give me some concrete advise about what to do?

A fix if forthcoming soon to beta/128. If you need something right away, you can either user the 64bit version of Thunderbird 128, or Daily. The repair should work - any lost messages can't be recovered for POP but would have to be obtained from own backups.

Thank you!
I donwloaded the 64 bit version (that's at least what was written in the drop down menu), but it only installed the 32 bit version again. The problems persist.
How can I install the 64 bit version?

I assume you just clicked the wrong version to start. Maybe uninstall the 32bit version first?

Do I have to set up all the accounts anew? I have downloadad build 130, but it asks me to enter my email data, and the account thatr is then created is empty.
If I uninstall the 32bit version, it says it will delete all corresponding data. Do I lose my accounts etc. if I continue?

Uninstalling keeps the data.
Profiles are based on install patch (and 64bit uses another path). Start with thunderbird.exe -p
to get the profile manager showing, and then find/select your original profile

References are restored, but it still freezes often. I am looking forward to the new version!

Just wondering, did you "restore the references" using your own backups? Also, did the original problem occur when viewing messages in "Inbox" or possibly other folders? If so, did you have a large number of messages in the problem folder? (Bug 1911076 for 32-bit TB would only cause a problem with large folders that contain more than 4 GB bytes of messages.)
Also, not sure what you mean by freezes. Do you mean TB locks up and has to be restarted or there are just short periods where it becomes unresponsive and then starts working OK again?

Sorry for not being clear! After installing the 64 bit version 130 (instead of 128), the emails were again presented with the correct content.
I've got well over 4 GB of mails, and it was the inbox I used "repair" on, after which step the referencing broke (which seems indeed related to the bug Magnus linked to).
Freezing not in the sense of needing a restart/reboot, but repeated periods of unresponsiveness of several seconds. Especially when new messages come in, but also when I hop from one message to another, or when I delete a message.

TB is now only unresponsive while downloading new emails (which wasn't the case in earlier versions).
What bugs me, though, is that links embedded in an image can no longer be left-clicked on in order to open them. Instead, the image is zoomed, which I don't need. Right-clicking works, but years of usage makes me left-click each time, so it gets even more cumbersome.
Is there a way to turn that off? I didn't find anything in the properties.

Does https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1908761#c5 help your performance issue?
And how many messages are in your Inbox?
What bugs me, though, is that links embedded in an image can no longer be left-clicked on in order to open them.
One issue per bug please. Perhaps best asked in support.

I lost several years worth of e-mails when this bug hit. I had many that opened all white and when I did as instructed and right clicked and fixed the folder LOTS of e-mails simply disappeared. Before I at least could see the subject and sender. Now I can't even see that. I'm told I will need to recover them from a back up - but will need to hire someone to help because I don't know how. Thunderbird keeps prompting me for permission to compact my e-mails but I am very concerned this will only make the problem of e-mails disappearing even worse so I have been declining. Has at least the problem of not being able to compact more than 4GB been solved?
