Bug 1929610 introduces a new "proxy" EwsDisplayProxyListener that is used when streaming a message from the message store. We should consider expanding this listener to check for mbox read fails and discard the offline copy of the message so it's downloaded again on the next attempt. A good example is ImapOfflineMsgStreamListener defined here.
