Based on this comment https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1825465#c3, product has agreed to show the app-wide setting for desktop mode but keep the default to mobile. That way users can choose to change the setting, while we are fixing the viewport issue (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1928771) to show desktop mode better consistently.

It is now in Nightly and can be accessed through the Settings, Site Settings, Request desktop mode.
