Steps to reproduce:
If I am deleting emails in my inbox and decide that I'd like to open the next one to read it (rather than delete it), I often find that pressing the Return key acts as if I'd once again clicked the Delete key. For a long time I thought this was my fault, but now my suspicions have been confirmed. This is a bug, and to my mind rather a serious one. (Actual version: 115.10.1 (64-bit))
Actual results:
Email is sent to Deleted folder.
Expected results:
Email opened in a new Tab.

Version 115 is no longer supported, and 115.10 is not the newest of the 115 series. Does this reproduce with version 128 in Help > Troubleshoot Mode?

I once had an uncle who was a fascinating characer. If ever someone complained they hadn't understood something he'd said, he would answer, "Which WORD did you not understand?". Let me make myself clear - I'm not trying to win a prize for exposing a bug in my particular version of Thunderbird. I'm just issuing a warning, which you can either investigate or ignore. The choice is yours.

I see my report has now been identified as a duplicate, so it wasn't a figment of my imagination! I confess the description of the original report was much clearer than mine. So if this problem has already been reported and nothing was done, I don't suppose my reporting it again will achieve anything. Pity.

It's early in the morning here so I might be missing something, but how can this be a duplicate of bug 1872239 when 1872239 is fixed in 115.8.0 and the reporter of this bug is using 115.10.1 (assuming that number is accurate)?

Yeah, the references should be the other way around. For the message header delete button this hasn't been fixed in ESR yet.

I note than in 1872239's report it mentions the Enter key (which I rarely use). I referred to the Return key (the big one above the RH shift key). Is this difference significant?

As far as I know, Thunderbird (like most other applications) makes no distinction between these two.

There is technically a difference. But in this context, and for most of today's keyboards, they are the same.
