Attached video 16-07-2025_14-22-36.mp4

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/138.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

We use thunderbird with our software. there is a function to send documents or other files -> thunderbird opens (standard mail-program). Normaly it should automatically open a new dialog/new Message/new Email with the document, file and/or desposited Email-Adress of the customer attached.
Since the last Thunderbird Update 140.0.1 this isn't working anymore.

Actual results:

Thunderbird opens but the "create new Mail" button isn't working. Because of this issue our software function isn't working - Video is attached

Expected results:

Normaly it should automatically open a new dialog/new Message/new Email with the document, file and/or desposited Email-Adress of the customer attached.
Before we had the 128.12 and there it worked.
Problem is we can not install the older version because the profils of our customers were already opened with the new version.

This looks like bug 1956258. Please make sure the account you want to use for sending ('RZL Mail') is actually set as default in Account Settings. Does this help?

Summary: In the 140. Version of Thunderbird there is the Problem that you can not create a new Message/E-Mail if the focus of your cursor is some where else → Can not create a new Message/E-Mail if the focus of your cursor is some where else

Doesn't help. Account is the default account...

  • Can you tell us the exact command line arguments Thunderbird is called with?
  • So, with previous versions, Thunderbird would automatically open the message compose window without the need to click the button?
  • In the video, the new message button appears to do work with the RZL account selected. So the actual problem is that my previous question is about?
  1. We use the simple-MAPI from Thunderbird. There is no other command line argument.
  2. Exactly. With attached Email-Adress or Document. Even the windows command "send to -> Mail recipient" if you right click on a document isn't working. Thunderbird software opens but nothing happens. Normally it should open the message compose window with the document attached.

Did you update by chance from ESR 128 32-bit to ESR 140 64-bit? There are still some issues with MAPI and the 64-bit version in combination with some software (see also bug 1879717).

Can you check if the registry keys for Thunderbird system integration are set correctly? I'll upload a registry file with the settings for the 64-bit version to compare.

Maybe you can find some hints what else to try in bug 1722256, other than that I have no idea unfortunately…

sadly this didn't help me. i tried but same thing as before

Did you already try ESR 140.1.0 on a test system? That version contains the fix for bug 1970126. While it is mainly about a problem with MAPI in the 32-bit version, maybe it makes a difference for you as well.

Hi @Robin Hanke,
If you already have Thunderbird opened and you click the button in your software, do you experience the same problem?

Do you have any extensions installed and active?

Hey @Johny Boy,
Sorry to ping you on this separate issue, but I'm wondering if you are able to test with your software to see if things still look good if the option is set to show the compose window. Would you be able to test quickly?

It seems that Robin's software is configured to show the compose window but they are experiencing problems...

Flags: needinfo?(lilale2363)

Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail as set by Thunderbird 141 64-bit. This seems to be often missing.

If Thunderbird is opening but the compose window is not, I'm not sure registry keys will help because it seems that Windows know what to open. Worth a try perhaps.

After all, I still think this is bug 1956258 (which still hasn't been fixed in ESR 140 or 141) or something similar. To verify this, please install Thunderbird Beta 142 on a test system. If it now works that's that.

What kind of account is "RZL Mail"? In your video, it appears not to have any subfolders which I find somewhat suspect. In "Account Settings", it does appear with a yellow star right next to "RZL Mail"?

Yeah we tried that as well but didn't make any difference.

Nothing changed with the beat version 142 ...

RZL Mail is a newsgroupserver which we are using. These settings have not been changed. Version 128.13 still works. Tried it on a Test system.

That is important information. I can confirm, without an email account this setup no longer works, regressed by bug 1919144.

Magnus, what's your opinion about this? See also bug 762000.

When did this change? With 140.01? It's still working with 128.13

This I don't understand. How is sending an email to a customer supposed to work with only a newsgroups account installed?

Attached image How it should look like

Maybe I am mistaken, but I think you have to set up an actual email account instead of a newsgroups account in order to send emails. This appears to have worked before only by chance…

The user clicks on “Send by email” in the program. Thunderbird opens with a new message. The file is attached, as is the email (if one is stored).
Most of the time, only the file is attached.
The user enters the email address to which they want to send the file themselves. The “From” field is filled in by default, as you can see in the screenshot. I'll send another screenshot of the other settings.

It worked for 400+ Users everytime on Version 128

But we will try this

Right, while in theory all that's needed is a configured SMTP server, I think it's quite reasonable that we require an actual email account to be configured to send mails.
