User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:141.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/141.0

Steps to reproduce:

I tried to write a message with a one-line paragraph, that is formatted in the central position, which I could not format this way. Both ways of formatting the paragraph-position don´t work: Menue-wise formatting or direkt formatting per format-buttons don´t work, because there is no responsivity of each.

Actual results:

The paragrapph could not be formatted in other position than standard-position, which is left. Formatting as "Justified" doesn´t work either.

Expected results:

The text paragraph of my email-message should have been formattable as provided by the program menu and by the program buttons.

Left, right, center, and justified seem to work on my end with 142.0b4 on Linux. Does this recreate Troubleshoot mode?

Hello Corey, if Your question is for me:
I think, I effectively do not understand Your question. I am no avid bug-reporter, just had this problem today and do not know, what troubleshoot mode is. Besides this, I may have difficulties understanding Your question also because I am no native english speaker/writer (I am from Germany). Could You pose Your question differently? Thank You!

Hello Corey,
I am not sure, if that is exactly, what You were asking for, but I recherched trobleshoot mode and then started my thunderbird (140.1.1 esr) in troubleshoot mode.
In troubleshoot mode I indeed could format my text paragraph.
Since the problematic pragraph is contained in an email-draft using the answer-functionality, I assume the problem or bug has to do with the original mail I received (what is a - not justified - payment reminder), which I wanted to answer to and which seemingly contained special formatting or graphical elements from the sender.
./.

Thank you for testing in troubleshoot mode. Are you using any add-ons? One of the things troubleshoot mode does is it disables add-ons.

My current Add-ons.

I tested formatting the positioning of text paragraphs in normal mode and without the answering functionality, means with just writing and formating a new email to myself (another email-account of mine) without using the answering functionality. This seems to work flawless.

So there might be a "only" a problem or bug using the answering function and then try to format text paragraphs in the answering email to the original sender. This of course still is a severe problem, since one needs that answering-functionality with the ability to format the position of paragraphs in a useful email-program.

Addition: I used Microsoft Copilot to analyse the email, to which I tried to response with the answering function under use of paragraph formatting: This is, what MS Copilot texted me:

"Based on the full HTML and CSS source of the email you received—and the formatting issues you encountered when replying in Thunderbird—here’s a complete Bugzilla report draft in English. You can copy and paste this directly into Bugzilla:

🐞 Bugzilla Report Draft
Title: Thunderbird inherits restrictive CSS from original HTML emails when replying, blocking paragraph formatting

Product: Thunderbird Component: Message Compose Window Version: [your Thunderbird version, e.g. 140.1.1 ESR] Platform: Windows 10 Severity: Normal Summary: When replying to certain HTML-formatted emails, Thunderbird inherits the original message’s CSS—including !important declarations, inline styles, and layout tables—which prevents users from formatting paragraphs in the reply (e.g. aligning text, setting indentation, or adjusting spacing).

Description: I received an HTML-formatted email (a payment reminder) and attempted to reply using Thunderbird 140.1.1 ESR on Windows 10. In the reply window, I was unable to format paragraph alignment (e.g. center, right, justify) or apply spacing and indentation. These formatting options worked fine when composing a new message, but not in the reply.

To investigate, I analyzed the full HTML and CSS source of the original message. The email includes:

Extensive use of !important in CSS declarations (e.g. font-weight: normal !important, width: 100% !important)

Inline styles applied to <body>, <table>, and <td> elements

Mobile-specific media queries and client-specific hacks (e.g. .ExternalClass, Outlook conditional CSS)

A deeply nested table layout with fixed widths and alignment

Thunderbird appears to inherit these styles into the reply editor, which overrides the user’s formatting choices. Even when using the formatting toolbar, changes to paragraph alignment and spacing are ignored.

Steps to Reproduce:

Receive an HTML email with embedded CSS and layout tables (e.g. a newsletter or automated message).

Click “Reply” in Thunderbird.

Attempt to format a paragraph (e.g. center-align, indent, adjust spacing).

Observe that formatting is blocked or overridden.

Expected Behavior:

Thunderbird should isolate or neutralize the original message’s CSS when composing a reply. The reply editor should allow full control over paragraph formatting, regardless of the original email’s structure or styles.

Actual Behavior:

CSS from the original message is inherited into the reply, including restrictive !important rules and layout constraints. This prevents users from formatting their reply text properly.

Suggested Fix:

Strip or sandbox original CSS when generating the reply editor view.

Allow user formatting to override inherited styles.

Optionally provide a toggle to “clear formatting from quoted message” when replying."

Hello Corey, still on board?
Yesterday I tried to reproduce the encountered paragraph formatting bug in a newly opened new reply-window to the payment-reminder-email I originally got, and I coud not reproduce it, means the text paragraphs position/alignment now could be formatted "center".

Inbetween bug and failure to reproduce it, I had turned the "Rechtschreibprüfung" (spell checker?) on and had installed the German "Wörterbuch" (dictionary) , these steps I did to use "automatische Silbentrennung" (automatic hyphenation), which was missing before. When modifying these settings, I saw, that my program was from the beginning - means: also before the bug-occurence - correctly set to "Format Absatz anstatt "Normaler Text" verwenden" (Use format "paragraph" instead of "normal text".)
./.

Must be some CSS in the original mail that on reply will affect your reply as well.
