The new Account Hub for Email (Bug 1853056 (tb-account-hub-email) ) allows users to set up EWS accounts (Graph API coming soon) and customize Oauth settings, whereas the existing FTUE which uses the legacy tab-based account setup does not. It is also a much more pleasant experience.

While we research, design and build the optimal experience, we would like to provide users with the new mail setup UX by default, not just for the second account.

This meta bug will track the changes needed to deliver the interim state.

Considerations...

  • Dialog over existing tabs is not optimal
  • Move Privacy Policy to a footer link and do not launch
  • Move Know your Rights to a footer link and remove the bottom bar
  • Optimize the logic used to decide when to display the FTUE (currently if closed it does not relaunch upon restart - perhaps better to always show unless user a.) has email account, b.) has calendar enabled + c.) has a contact)
  • pref changes?
  • Do not launch old setup tab
  • adjust tests to handle new flow

The Interim FTUE will have the following implemented:

  • Don't show account creation tab on startup
  • Show privacy policy tab behind account hub on first run
  • Show account hub on startup, if there are no accounts that are setup: Valid accounts have either a local folder, Calendar (Local, LDAP, CalDav), or Address Book (Local, CardDav)
  • Update header text in account hub to say "Welcome to Thunderbird" on account hub start up:
  • Add privacy policy link to footer of account hub
  • Prevent users from closing account hub with "esc" on first run
  • Remove the “Do you want to use Thunderbird without an email account?” popup.
  • Change the opacity to reduce visibility of the empty 3Pane.
