User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030408 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030408 My mail window is standard: | |--| I had about 7 mails in the upper right window, and deleted one of them, and then the horizontal splitter went up and down, about 1 line height, about 3 times per second, rough estimate. When I moved a vertical splitter in my Windows98-Taskbar, the frequency of mozillas splitter sank drastically, but returned to the previous level, when I released the win98-grippie. Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Steps to Reproduce: 1.saw it some time ago 2. 3. I saw this error some time ago, but couldn´t reproduce it. Maybe a dupe of bug 57696 maybe related to bug 201379 which describes a similar vibration with an open letter. Severity: minor, because it´s rare normal, because it is quite disturbing when it is seen.
This was a problem a while ago; it may have regressed (though as I recall it was never "really fixed").

found a way to reproduce right here on this buzilla page with Page Info. Open View/PageInfo/Headers and resize vertically. Ctrl-I, Alt-H, and move lower right edge up/down. The upper window "Request Headers" shows 6 of 10 lines and a scroll bar, the lower window "Response Headers" shows 6 of 7 lines and a scroll bar. If I´m pulling the lower edge down, the scroll bar in the lower field is going, and the bar between lower and upper field is vibrating. If I´m still enlarging height, the vibrating stops, and resumes, when the upper scrollbar vanishes, and stops after further enlarging. The header info in Page Info is from an extension: http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org/ I don´t think that it is the bug of the extension, it is so carefully coded it even has a shortcut Alt-H.
I don't have that extension installed. I was able to see the vibration on the page splitter on the Info dialog's Links and Media tabs, however. I loaded this page, just as Hermann suggested. Both the Links and Media tabs had two items in the upper listbox. Dragging the splitter so that the listbox grew too short immediately started the vibration going, even without letting go of the splitter. Resizing the Info box seemed to make no difference. However, I cannot get my mail window's splitter to vibrate in the same way. Boris, I looked for open bugs in Mail/News with "jump" "flicker" "vibrat" "oscil" in the description. Bug 201379 is the oldest one that talks about the splitter in the mail window.

Per advice of Boris Zbarsky, I'm moving this bug over to Browser / XP Apps. (Actually, I'm *trying* to move it; the Bugzilla interface isn't giving me the "XP Apps" componenent option after I switch Product to "Browser.") The original bug about the horizontal splitter between the message list pane and the message body pane has been duplicated, but the extra information here about the splitter in the Page Info makes this a candidate for the more basic bug. I have reproduced the Page Info splitter vibration with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030415 I cannot reproduce with 1.3 Final. CC's added per Boris.

I'm not 100% sure that I can't reproduce the bug because of this patch but I like it so I'm not backing it out of my tree to test it :-P
found a comment in another bug, offering a testcase on demand (Dec. 2002) bug 90276#c8 sizeToContent does not play nice with windows whose dimensions are persisted .... I created a sub-window with window.open() and this subwindow has an onresize event listener function which calls the sizeToContent() method. The strange thing is that this sub-window keeps changing sizes (width and height) of a few pixels all the time. The window looks like a heart pumping all the time. ....Phoenix 0.4, Phoenix 0.5, K-Meleon0.7
saw it today in Venkman when trying to test bug 202595 STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Bring up Mozilla and Venkman side-by-side so they don't overlap had 5 tabs open, they showed as oneliners in top left field of venkman, and the two fields below where pumping up and down continuously.
I´ve seen this bug once or twice since my last comment, once in Venkman, only opening it. If it is visible, it is highly distracting. Neill, your patch is now a month old, and I assume a month living in your trunk, do you think it should be in 1.4? If so, could you ask for r and sr?
Proposed patch living in Neils tree now for a month. Bug 204605 maybe a dup of this one, bug 201379 depends on this one. Requesting blocking because long tested? fix is available, needs only r/sr/a. hope this one gets fixed for 1.4.
Flags: blocking1.4?
I've been following a bug similar (or possibly the same) in 201379. I have been able to get this bug to appear as often as I like by performing a clean reinstall of mozilla. However this patch seems to have fixed it.
I don't actually know who's best to ask to review this.
This bug may also be behind bug 131733, altho I'm hesitant to set a dependency.
This bug, or the dependent bug 201379, may also be behind the bug 204605

Would you please read Bug 210184, is this the same Bug? Thanks.
Sorry, but I'm quite new to this BugZilla thing. I'm trying to help here, so I'm very sorry again. This comment has been recopied from Bug 210184 that I have filed and marked duplicate. Basically the thing is, the Email preview pane and the Email Listing Pane in the 3-pane email window flickers / shakes / vibrates up & down when I received a new email. This will happen, let's say there are seven (7) previous / old email. Make sure you delete all newly received email (the one in Bold Typeface). Compose new email (complete with the subject and msg area or email body at least filled-up with some text), send it to yourself. click the send button and send. then click the get Msgs button to retrieve your email. After you have received the new email you've created and send to yourself just now, the all two(2) pane on the right-hand-side on the 3-pane window (I really hope you know what I meant) will flicker up and down sometime slowly then keep pacing up till one point it flicker too fast you can't even read your email. Maybe it may eat up your memory or processor time, coz I experience a slight slowdown in my PC. I saw this too: mozilla 1.4 , Windows 2000 Pro SP4 I first thought this is bug 121583 and I posted comments 142 and 143 there. It seems the problem appears, when the amount of messages in the message list panel is just about the soze of the panel itself.
This still repeats in Mozilla 1.5 beta (including the nightly build available last evening (9/5)). -Jeff
Jeff Buhrt: do you mean the splitter between the thread and message panes is still vibrating? That comment should be placed in bug 201379, which is the actual fix for that problem. 201379 turns out to have been specific to the Classic (native) theme. As noted in comment 3 and 4, I generated the Page Info splitter vibration symptom (originally described in this bug's comment 2) with 1.4b; that was using the Pinball theme. I just tried that again with 1.5b-0908, both Classic and Modern themes, and was unable to reproduce. Hermann Schwab, are you still seeing that particular symptom?
retried steps from comment 2 this time using livehttpheaders 0.6 and Mozilla Build ID 2003091104, couldn´t reproduce. Using LiveHTTPHeaders 0.6 I filed bug 216708 about a similar problem, very easy reproducible. Couldn´t see it there either, so I recommend closing this bug as worksforme, if also working in 1.4.1, yet untested. Trunk seems to be fixed somewhere.
retried steps from comment 2 this time using livehttpheaders 0.6 and Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4.1) Gecko/20030906, couldn´t reproduce. I´m resolving this bug as worksforme, as I can´t reproduce steps from comment 2 using 1.4.1 or Trunk, and LiveHTTPheaders hasn´t changed since I last tested this bug. I didn´t test the mail related steps, but there are tons of mail related bugs about this, like bug 201379.

Addendum: after reading comment 21 stating bug still seen in Build ID 20030905, I tested with BuildID 20030904 showing this bug, and BuildID 2003090704 not showing this bug. Bonsai shows the following checkin: 09/05/2003 13:20 Workaround for oscillating splitter in mailnews (bug 201379)
On 9/9 switched to 2003090904 and it was fine. Thanks. [Sorry, I had hit reply and got a bounce vs updating the bugzilla status.]
