Ok, I know some are going to think this is silly, but I'm 100% serious. Some
quality smilies are in order here. What am I talking about? Those 1
dimentional placeholders currently shipping with Mozilla. A bit awkward, and
early 90's.
Why go with something better looking? It's friendly and attractive to endusers.
Looks professional, fresh, modern, new. Whose doing it?
Apple's iChat:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/jaguar/ichat.html (lining some text on the page).
Nice 3D icons.
AOL is also introducing some remastered smiles. AFAIK they are still the same
list (http://www.aim.com/emoticons.adp)
phpBB's got some nice ones, int attempt to compete with other commercial boards
(UBB) who were a bit outdated looking.
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/phpbb/phpBB2/images/smiles/
IMHO, Mozilla, should adopt more (if it's going to keep the smilies). Perhaps
adopt the smilies used by phpBB? They have some nice 3d's ones, that aren't to
3d, yet look a bit more professional than the ones in Mozilla. Not to mention
the few animated ones could really make endusers feel fuzzy.... to file in
another bug.
It's silly and small. But a nice way to polish up a bit. Thunderbird coming
out soon as a solid app. New UI, clean looking... would be a nice way to make
it look real complete, and enduser ready.
Laugh if you must. But friendly eyecatching polish like this goes a long way
with the enduser.

All the smilies you've mentioned are likely copyrighted and hence not usable. A
graphic artist needs to design some smilies before anything can happen here...

Bug 155028 is in regard to adding more.
This bug is in regard to getting professional looking png's to match the nice
new themes we have going for Thunderbird.

This set of icons seems to be reasonable free,
most of it is 'designed' by me.

These icons are very similar to the ones of phpBB.
The source is actually unclear.

The attached smilies are much smaller than the ones currently used in MailNews.
On high resolution monitors they are hard to distinguish. :-(

That's right the current ones are bigger.
In fact on my 1024x768 (which is fairly common), they are
even much bigger than the font in which they are used.
App's need still also be usable on 800x600 and 1024x768
monitors. (see attached screenshot)
Maybe we need icons for different pixels/inch screens?

Thunderbird as meanwhile got some nice smilies.
Why not just copy them over to the suite and then close this bug?

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".
This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

As far as I known the 'Suite' or Seamonkey is still using 'old' smileys, but the
'Chatzilla' extension to firefox has better smilies...
