User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6a) Gecko/20030926 Firebird/0.7+ Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6a) Gecko/20030926 Firebird/0.7+ I often skim news sites (such as /., or The Register). I do this (in Firebird, but I think the bug belongs here) by opening several such pages at once in tabs. Then I read them and open all interesting links in additional tabs. When I'm done with one page, I close the tab until there are none left. This would be much easier if I could wheel-scroll the current page while the mouse pointer is over the "close tab" button, because I wouldn't have to move the mouse at all. I'm aware that this proposal conflicts with many, many other wishes for the mouse wheel to change tabs while the pointer is in the tab bar, but since I can't imagine that the wheel could be used precisely enough to select one specific tab, and because the close button is outside the immediate tab area, I think this could be done. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

I think this type of thing would break the proper expectations of UI functionality, and would probably be better left to an extension.
This might be delivered with Bug 194696 or Bug 270101, if either get implemented
... or Bug 308215. but bug 281192 might prevent this.

another example: reading my morning list of webcomics (in 15 open tabs), and blogs, and photoblogs, would be more efficient if i could just hover over the closetab button, and scroll the pages. this is the fix i'd most appreciate, out of all the mouse wheel scroll implementation possibilities: --- summation of similar 'mouse wheel scrolling' enhancement requests: bug 308215: allow page to wheelscroll whilst mouse is over any menu areas bug 220397: allow page to wheelscroll whilst mouse is over closetab button bug 194696: allow page to wheelscroll whilst mouse is over tabs (conflicts with bug 281192)
Neil, as UI czar, can you WONTFIX this? (or jag, you?)
In some applications the scroll wheel scrolls the focused element. This makes absolutely no sense to me until keyboards get their own scroll wheel, and Gecko takes the reasonable step of scrolling the hovered element -> WONTFIX. This also won't be fixed because of bug 281192 (or its equivalent).
