I get email notification of construction work in my zone. I need to save these
to a file on disk.

yes and it would be great to automatically save attachments to a special folder.
i get every day traffic- and mail statistics in .csv-format via email. it would
be great, if i can automatically archive the attachments

Saving messages manually to import them into Sunbird is painful. Being able to
save a message automatically would help.

Better yet would be the ability to save a message to a file *and* then to run a
script or program on that file.

Ditto. I could then send all my hourly reports (168 reports per week!) into text files, not simply into another part of the Tbird file 'system'. Because I run scripts on these to extract summarised info.
Either that, or fix bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=263949 which would allow me to do much the same thing.
