Description Nathan Sandver 2003-10-16 22:51:45 PDT
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/85.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/85.5
Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.3 (20031013)

In the Choose Helper Applications dialog box, regular files are selectable, but all programs are
greyed out, so I'm unable to choose one to open the attachment with. In this case, I was
attempting to open a JPG attachment (before noticing that Thunderbird displayed it inline). I have
not tried this with other file types, since attachments are pretty rare for me.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Receive mail with (image) attachment
2 [review]. Double-click the attachment in the list
3. Select Open With (which presents no options other than "Other...")
4. In Choose Helper Application dialog, try to pick an application
Actual Results:
I was unable to select an application

Expected Results:
I should have been able to select an application

This problem also occurs with Mozilla Firebird 0.7.1 under OSX 10.3

Nathan, would you consider bumping up the Priority, Severity, and/or Target
Milestone of this bug? I filed a "duplicate" to this one (Bug 224121) because
this same code affects Firebird. In fact, this bug makes Firebird impossible to
use in some situations (you can't select your Download helpers!), so it's a
"gating" bug for some Mac users (well, me, at least).

Hopefully this will get someone's attention, as this bug hasn't even been moved
from its "New" state in the 2.5 months it's been here.

Maybe Scott can work on it after the holidays? :-)

Cheers!

It does let you select one kind of application: carbon apps that are not
packaged in an .app directory. I noticed that Yahoo Messenger is selectable, and
I assume that to be the reason.

Specifying something like /Applications/Preview.app manually in mimeTypes.rtf
does work, so it seems the only problem is the way the Choose Application dialog
is setup.
