There is an option, on by default, to not download img tags by default. This is
good. What I propose is that there be an option to turn these img tags into
links, which would open in the default browser when clicked. This would allow
individual opening of images in received mail, with extreme ease.

This covers similar ground to bug 216133. I prefer that bug's solution of
viewing all images at once to having to click each image. If you want to see
one image in an email, you probably want to see them all. Especially given that
you won't know what image you're about to see until you click on it - I can't
imagine clicking each image in turn in order to see it; far better to just click
a button to show them all.

That solution would be fine.
As to how I would know, I know that I don't want any GIFs, for example, because
they're just layout. So, I only have to click on the one or two jpeg images.
Plus, if a message has lots of images, I generally don't want to see any of them.
