Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031118 Firebird/0.7+
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031118 Firebird/0.7+
User name and password are never remembered, even though the "Use password
manager to remember this password" checkbox is selected.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Access URL
2.Enter user name and password
3.Log out and attempt to log in a second time
Actual Results:
Attempt to log a second time (after a successful login) brings up a blank (no
user name or password) password manager dialog (drop down sheet). The "Use
password manager to remember this password" checkbox is no longer selected.
Expected Results:
Remember user name and password (works on Camino and Mozilla suite).

I can't confirm this bug because I don't have a working u/p for that site.
I noticed that the realm name is not English.
Summary: Password manager fails to remember password. → Password manager fails to remember http basic auth password

Yes, the domain name is in Japanese. On further testing this seems to be the
problem - the text for the domain name is garbled in the signons.txt file. If I
correct the garbled text in this file the user name and password are filled in
correctly at the next login, but if I check the "use password manager to
remember..." check box the Japanese text in the file is again garbled, and the
password manager fails to fill in the the fields at the login after that. This
site works correctly in Camino and Mozilla Suite, so perhaps they are saving the
file with a different encoding (Unicode?).

I suspect this was fixed just recently by the checkin for bug 218927. Chris:
could you check this with a recent nightly and a fresh profile if need be?
Thanks

Still doesn't work for me on the 12/14 nightly, with or without a fresh profile...

In Linux, I am having the same problem. The passwords would not save in Firefox
0.8, but the user name or e-mail address remains filled in. I have tested this
with Mail.com (http://www.mail.com) and Netscape WebMail
(http://wp.netscape.com/netcenter/mail). The same problem also persists in the
Windows versions of Firebird/Firefox, so would the bug reporter please change
the Hardware and OS from Mac OS X to All, please?

Pretty sure this is a dupe of 218405. The proxy address is not English. This
should have been fixed by bug 228270 but has regressed apparently.
