User-Agent: Opera/7.23 (Windows NT 5.1; U) [en]
Build Identifier: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/2003-11-10-trunk/thunderbird-win32.zip
Since 0.1 there has been a problem with mismatched subject/body but not always.
<cntl>U, display the message source shows the correct message source for a pair
of messages where the same subject line, upper pane, is diplayed for both.
The subject of the second message (lower) is displayed for both.
The preview pane shows the correct headers.
This has severe effects on spam filtering... the wrong items are listed.
Duplicate subject lines may or may not be duplicates.
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1.It is not possible to reproduce it to order.
2.
3.
Same thing with W2000 and different machine.
I only use IMAP.

I have the same problem. It behaves for a while if I delete all the messages
from the offending folder, but eventually the problem comes back.

Exactely the same problem under Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 under Win98 using IMAP.
The difference is that if I quit and restart Thunderbird 2-3 times headers and bodies suddently get synchronized !
IMPORTANT : This only happens on new messages that just arrived or are arriving !

I have stopped using IMAP but otherwise am a heavy user of TB email.
I have _not_ seen the problem since I stopped using IMAP.

sorry, I don't quite get the description ... Is this a common case (in which case it's a dup) of the message selected in the thread pane does not match anything that's in the preview (body) pane?
Or, are there multiple subject lines in the message? In which case it's bug 172104.

From my memory and writing longhand: -
The subject line displayed in the subject line window, and then the subject line displayed in the message window DO match. But the message body displayed in the message window does NOT belong to the displayed subject line shown in the message window nor the subject window. (anyone got a screen dump to demonstrate?)
cntrl U source on a message shows the true subject line for the message, that is the message is actually ok. I assume from that it is a fault with the subject line display picking up the wrong subject line.
If you delete a message based on the subject line, the message deleted will have had some other subject line. (so you end up deleting wanted messages)
Bet that doesn't help! :-)

Tim Channon : I confirm, your description is exactly describing the same bug as I had. It didn't happened for me from some time, maybe because I never touch anything anymore in TB while new messages are downloaded (too dangerous !)

I was using TB with the free to use Mercury IMAP4 server. (same people who do the Pegasus mail client, pay for support and proper documentation).
That might be useful because running a local server is easy on an NT-class box and might even be possible on a dev. PC, therefore extreme stress tests can be done. I may have had >2G of email on IMAP, including account sharing. (more than one client accessing the same IMAP account concurrently)
Used on NT4, S2000, W2000, XP, all worked and as service. Live email server with remote IMAP access for remote working. Test setup here on a LAN between XP boxes.
Is in the WineHQ database
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=300
(as an historical note it worked fine with spampal for RBL etc. on the same box accepting incoming internet SMTP and get incoming via ISP POP3, all passing through spampal)
Give you the link to present version of Mercury.
http://www.pmail.com/downloads.htm
Easy to install, a pain to understand and set up.
A warning if you do try this. Unless it has been upgraded, folders may not contain messages and folders, is restriction. When creating a folder include a slash at the end of the name.
The TB problem was episodic, sometimes ok, sometimes not. I couldn't find a definite pattern to it, but imagined patterns plenty of times, not reproducable. Not bad enough to stop me using it.
In writing this something is coming back into memory. (i am aspergers) It's ages ago now. For some reason I found it necessary to delete the local IMAP TB cache data but I don't want to mislead you, it might have been for another reason to do with corruption, ie. can't tell if it was TB or not. It is a hint to watch out for something like that. It was so bad I had a batch file to do it.
Just checked, out of 686 bat files here, none of them so it was on a W2000 box, not this one.
And that is about all I can add.

I have the same bug on version 2.0.0.9 on Windows XP Professional. Subject headlines in the new messages taskbar dialog just do not match with the message bodies when there are many messages unread.
