Clicking a mailto: link in a web browser will crash Thunderbird if it is already
running and is specified as the default mail program. This happens with both
Firebird and Safari. I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5a (20031213).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use the Apple Mail Preferences window to set the default mail reader to
Thunderbird.
2. Open a page with a mailto: link. I used the page listed above.
3.Click the mailto link.

Actual Results:
Thunderbird crashes.

Expected Results:
Thunderbird should open and present the mail compose window.

I'm using Panther (10.3.1) on a G5.

don do you see this too?
On my G4 this does not occur, but a friend with a G5 was able to duplicate the
crash with the 12-14 build. In fact, much to my surprise, opening a mailto link
into a new compose window actually works in 10.3 (Panther)!
This happens on my powerbook running 10.3.2 with Thunderbird 0.4 as well as
tonights 1.12.04 release. After awhile I get the following error box:

Error launching browser windows:Type Error:
Components.classes['@mozilla.org/appshell/component/browser/instance;1'] has no
properties.

This is from clicking on a mailto link within Firebird and having thunderbird as
the default mail app.
Thunderbird doesn't crash for me but I do get this error:

Error launching browser windows:Type Error:
Components.classes['@mozilla.org/appshell/component/browser/instance;1'] has no
properties.

It happens when clicking on mailtos in any browser, and is still present in .5
final.
Don, you interested in working on this bug with getting mailto links working
right on OSX?

I don't get a crash but I never get a mail compose window either.
just a "me, too" report for the dialog box that comes up, but not the crasher. it seems different than
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=231032 ; apparently, mailto: is working properly for some
of those folks some of the time. so perhaps there is some configuration problem that causes it to
misbehave with the dialog box for us, but works in most cases without spaces in the subject lines for
them.
the dialog box

Error launching browser windows:Type Error:
Components.classes['@mozilla.org/appshell/component/browser/instance;1'] has no
properties.

as reported by eric on 2004/02/12 is still appearing for me in a newly
downloaded version (0.5+ 20040411)

fairly convinced this might be a configuration problem, since it seems there are
other bugs that indicate that many are not having this problem.

i'd be glad to get into an emacs window in OS X, dired to the proper place,
delete files or text-edit whatever .dat, .rdf, or whatever files are necessary.
this seems like a major problem to me, and it's really starting to annoy me a
lot. if someone on the mozilla project has an idea, email me offline, i can
perhaps IM with you to figure out what to do ...
this has been fixed in 0.6 by the patch in 234541 which is now in the 0.6
branch. That patch still needs checked into the trunk (in some form). Marking
this fixed will leave 234541 open until it lands in the trunk.

Please verify with the 0.6 candidate builds:

With Thunderbird version 0.6b (20040425), this now behaves correctly on my
system: a G5 running OS X 10.3.3. I tested with Firefox 0.8 and Safari 1.2.1 and
tried it with Thunderbird running and not running when I clicked the link. A
mail compose window appeared in all cases.
thanks for testing chuck.
I just tested and am happy to confirm that it works for me as well!
