(In reply to comment #1) > Created an attachment (id=147900) > shows the vcalendar being displayed in the email - not as an attached .ics file > The same results occur in Thunderbird 0.7.2 when an email is received which contains mime content-type text/calendar.
I always run into this problem. Here is the message which I get and it is displayed as text. BEGIN:VCALENDAR PRODID:-//Microsoft Corporation//Outlook 11.0 MIMEDIR//EN VERSION:2.0 METHOD:REQUEST BEGIN:VEVENT ATTENDEE;ROLE=REQ-PARTICIPANT;RSVP=TRUE:MAILTO:someoneelse@somewhere.com ORGANIZER:MAILTO:someone@somewhere.com DTSTART:20041221T130000Z DTEND:20041221T133000Z LOCATION:asdffassdf TRANSP:OPAQUE SEQUENCE:0 UID:040000008200E00074C5B7101A82E00800000000D076BBC9BDE6C4010000000000000000100 0000098B754D0E19EED4A88CA58E14947F7CB DTSTAMP:20041220T230028Z DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, December 21\, 2004 8:00 AM-8:30 AM (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada).\nWhere: asdffassdf\n\n*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*\n\n\n SUMMARY:test PRIORITY:5 X-MICROSOFT-CDO-IMPORTANCE:1 CLASS:PUBLIC BEGIN:VALARM TRIGGER:-PT15M ACTION:DISPLAY DESCRIPTION:Reminder END:VALARM END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR Why is this bug labeled unconfirmed? I suspect this might have something to do with ancient profiles since I've been running Thunderbird since version 0.4 and has not changed my profile (nor do I want to).
There are three behaviors that I have seen associated with this bug: 1. If the message is plain-text, and there is no message text other than the calendar file, the calendar info is displayed inline. --OR-- 2. If the message is plain-text, and there IS message text other than the calendar file... "" and the calendar info is not displayed. --OR-- 3. If the message is HTML, the attachment is not displayed at all. Viewing the source confirms that the attachment is present, but Thunderbird is treating is as garbage after the the </html> tag in the message body. Behaviors #2 and #3 may occur because Exchange does not insert a blank line before the MIME separator in the message. This is consistently reproducible in Thunderbird 1.0 and 1.0.2 on Windows XP SP2 and MacOS X (10.3.8).
I can confirm this problem. These invitations should be easy to recognize, at least for me this header is always present: Content-Type: text/calendar; method=REQUEST; charset="UTF-8" Wouldn't it be possible to create an extentions that handled this while we wait for a permanent solution?

(In reply to comment #6) > Wouldn't it be possible to create an extentions that handled this while we wait > for a permanent solution? For what it's worth, installing the Lightning 0.3 extension seems to solve this problem. On messages with incorrectly formed MIME attachments, Lightning causes Thunderbird to see the .ics attachment as an actual attachment. I'm not actually using Lightning to manage my calendar, but just having the extension installed changes the behavior of how Thunderbird parses the message, so I can simply double-click on the meeting.ics attachment to feed it to an external helper program (in my case Apple iCal).

Summary: vcalendar /ical attachment displayed as text in mail in stead of attachement → vcalendar /ical attachment displayed as text in mail in stead of attachment
Yes! Thanks for the tip. Installing the Lightning plugin allows me to actually see the attachment files finally. I'm surprised this is still an issue!

This bug remains an issue when not using Lightning. I use iCal, and when calendar invites are present as an attachment in a multi-part message they are presented as an attachment, I can double click to open in iCal and everything works fine. If the invite is the body of the message itself, with a content-type of text/calendar then it is presented inline, with no option to open it another application.

Shouldn't bug 505024 be marked as a duplicate of this one? Regardless, does that mean that 12 years later someone might actually take a crack at this?

(In reply to markham breitbach from comment #12) > Shouldn't bug 505024 be marked as a duplicate of this one? even though bug 505024 is newer, it has much more context. So we don't dup 505024 back to this :)
