Summary: Visiting the above URL, (my web page), and clicking on any of the
Javscript links on the image map once, results in the GeoCities' Javascript ad
to show up 3 times at the bottom of the page in the lower left corner. It should
show up once on the top right of the page. (...is JavaScript fully implemented
into Mozilla?) Im using build 2000012208, (M12, a nightly build).
Mozilla reports:
JavaScript Error: TypeError: document.y10 has no properties
URL: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/8110/main.html
LineNo: 44
Internet Explorer has a slightly similar problem, it reports a JavaScript error
and does not show the ad at all when going to the URL listed above, but not when
going straight to the real site
(http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/8110/). Netscape Navigator 4.x has
no problems.
Reproduction: Visit http://rtool3.cjb.net

Yes. The geocities sites uses server-side user-agent detection to append a
<SCRIPT> to the end of the page. The included js code then uses <LAYER> and
the document.layers api which does not exist in mozilla.
It seems quite straightforward to instead uses the DOM per W3C to implement
the same functionality for mozilla/5.0+ (plus lots of refinements made possible
by CSS). I'll add more later.

Adding [LAYER] so I can look this up later (yes, I will get back to this bug
:-)). But, mystiq, thanks for filing this boog (even though the resolution is
invalid, as noted above).

Moving all [LAYER] bugs to Evangelism component for tracking and open-source
evangelism by mozilla community members of sites that need to upgrade to support
web standards such as HTML 4.0 (instead of LAYER/ILAYER) and the W3C DOM
(instead of Nav4 document.layers[] or IE document.all()). Sites should be
lobbied to do the upgrade using the email templates that are linked to from
http://www.mozilla.org/newlayout/bugathon.html#layerbugs . When a site's owner
has confirmed receipt of the message requesting an upgrade, the bug should be
marked with the keyword evangelized to indicate that evangelism for that bug is
complete. When the site finishes the upgrade and supports standards, the bug
should be closed.

The bad GeoCities ads still appear in this page. I will reopend and contact the
page author mystiq@optonline.net (Ross Lombardi) to ask him to contact
Yahoo/Geocities to see if they have updated ad code. He currently references
http://us.geo1.yimg.com/us.geocities.com/js_source/ygNSLib9.js?v2
but there may be a newer version. We need to investigate Geocities member web
pages to see if this is something we need to contact geocities.yahoo.com about.

Thanks for the automatic email guys :)
As far as I recall, GeoCities automatically slaps on the ad code to your page.
You don't even need to have code in your page telling it to do this, it even
auto detects the largest frame if you have frames and puts the code on the
respective frame. Eg, a long time ago they had a watermark, which was then
replaced by this lovely drop-down ad which I despise but it's better than
pop-ups.
So basically, there is nothing GeoCities members can do about the ad code on
their page. Any problems with it should get referred to GeoCities not the poor
webmaster.

this thing should really be fixed.. geocities pages really are looking ugly...
for example, on my page http://www.geocities.com/bestspl there are 3 sort of ad
boxes in the top-left corner, and they don't really display ads.. just sit
there, and you cannot close them, cos if you try, the page will refresh... and
because of them, the content in my site is being pushed down
Comment 27•23 years ago

Geocities clearly needs to hear from their customers in order to prioritize
fixing this. I have let them know several times over the past few months what
the issue is yet seen no response. Thanks.
Comment 28•23 years ago

why can't this be fixed from mozilla's site instead of Geocities?
Comment 29•23 years ago

Mozilla is based on web standards, which does not include the proprietary LAYERS
tag that is used on Geocities for these ads.

Although the geocities ads are hidable via layers, it is quite often that the
javascript itself is broken (or whatever generating it is). Its been clearly
established that they don't do browser detection for Netscape > 5. Lately I've
been finding that it messes with page layout and sometimes making my scrollbars
dissappear. Can someone please smack them around more?

Somebody ought to be putting continued pressure on Yahoo / GeoCities to fix
this, rather than just WONTFIXing it and putting it out of sight, out of mind.

Comment 38•22 years ago

Please do. I have communicated with them, provided them code which will correct
the problems and had no luck in getting them to fix it. WONTFIX is not out of
sight out of mind. It is an easy way to delineate sites which have not or will
not change. If others have the time to contact these sites they are easy to find.
The only thing that will change their minds is for their users to complain
and/or move their content elsewhere.
I can't force them to do something if they don't want to do it.

What's amazing is that this *STILL* hasn't been fixed by Geocities.
The way they currently serve up the ads is not only ugly, it just plain doesn't
work; they might as well just remove the ad banner entirely for Moz users, since
we won't see the actual ad anyway, just "undefined"...

It appears that Yahoo is working on this problem. On some Geocities-hosted
websites, collapsible text ads that work in Mozilla are now appearing instead of
the old 3-panel graphic ad boxes. However, the new ads and old ads seem to be
showing up interchangeably. I have taken a screenshot of these new ads, and it
can be found at: http://oldf2s.f2g.net/temp/2004/10/16/geocitiesads.jpg
