Open Edit/Preferences/Mail-Newsgroups and you will find a red source line in the
window (see in the attached Screenshot).
This bug occurs with Mozilla 2004072608 & WinXP.

In your screenshot there is a line missing in General Settings:

[x] Use Mozilla Mail as the default mail application

Do you use extensions, did you install an extension just before this bug was seen?
with the previous (one weak old) 1.8 Mozilla I had german dictionary installed.
!!!by the way, spell checking does not work at all!
No I do not use any extension.

I'm also seeing this, win2k trunk 2004080607. Moving to what I hope is a better
place...

Summary: line of sourcecode is visible in the Preference-Windows → XUL error about mailNewsEnableMapi is visible in preferences
Flags: blocking1.8a3?
Whiteboard: DUPEME
I see this problem as well -- currently with 0806-Win2K -- and also do not have
any extensions installed. All reporters of this bug so far (including at the
dupes) have been using Win2K or WinXP; the people reporting WFM have been using
Win98 (except perhaps Neil, who did not specify).

This error is exactly correspondant to the missing "make mozilla the default
mailer" -- the error is from XUL saying there is something wrong with the
definition of that checkbox. The checkbox is defined in chrome/messenger.jar --
the path and file is: content/messenger-mapi/pref-mailNewsOverlay.xul
In my installation, this appears as:

  <checkbox id="mailnewsEnableMapi" label="&enableMapi.label;"
            accesskey="&enableMapi.accesskey;"
            oncommand="onEnableMapi();"
            startupFunc="registerCallback();"/>

This problem doesn't appear to be theme-dependent -- it's visible in Classic and
Modern, as well as my usual Pinball.

Once again, cc'ing the mail/UI guys.

The problem is identified, and a workaround provided, at bug 253475 comment 8.
Good work, Ostgote!

Incidentally, two meta-problems with this bug is that the text of the error
(1) is shown in a much larger font than it needs to be, and (2) cannot be
selected for copying (altho the cursor changes to the insert-character cursor
when hovered over).

I think this was broken by Scott M's checkin for bug 253617.
CCing bryner, because I think his fix for bug 252056 may have caused this.

I see this bug, on W98SE too.
[Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040803] (release) (W98SE)

No bug in v1.7.2. regressed "after" this...

bryner moved mapi locale without telling the installer. mscott fixed
thunderbird in bug 253617 but nobody cares about seamonkey.
