User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040731 Firefox/0.9.1+
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040731 Firefox/0.9.1+
Now, when using 20040731 build, I can see a tooltip when hovering over a
bookmark icon but no tooltip when I hover over Live Bookmark.
Anyway, when it comes to the contents of such a tooltip I'd better see a
description provided in Properties of such a bookmark, not the URL. In case of
Live Bookmark, I'd like to see the same result as in, for example, Sage
extension, where the tooltip contains what's between <description> and
</description> of a RSS file.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Tooltips provided as described above.
Expected Results:
Tooltips as described above
I suggest to install Sage to see what I mean.
I would very much like to see both the full title of the bookmark (and in the
case of Live Bookmarks the full title of the article) followed by whatever else
people vote to tack on (URL, description). It is very annoying, especially with
Live Bookmarks, to not be able to get the full title of the article. When
browsing bookmarks, I get something like:
Gmail's New Features - Atom feed and "inline"...
Now I have to load the article just to find out the full title. It would be
nice if the tooltip showed something like:
+------------------------------------------------------------+
| Gmail’s new features - Atom feed and “inline” Contact list |
| http://example.com/article/gmails_new_features.html |
+------------------------------------------------------------+
My vote is to not use the description because I think it will make the tooltips
too verbose and cluttered.
I'd definitely love to see the full title on hovering the livemark. News items
regarding specific versions of software tend to make little sense if the version
number gets capped and you need to open the livemark just to find out whether
it's about a new version or an old one.
Same problem with W3C news items ("X..." could be litterally ANYTHING they have
produced lately).

I definitivly need this feature to get the headline of an article without
clicking on the live bookmark. All the information is there: Why don't we use
it? I prefer the tooltip method and therefor voted for this bug.

It is a duplicate of that bug, except that it is more specific (and has more
votes.. ).
Thing is, in the comments of 253912, you guys talk about showing the title and
url in the tooltip; The reporter of that bug, and myself, have requested showing
the description.
Is it possible to rephrase both bugs (retaining their votes) as "allow user to
set the contents of Live Bookmarks tooltips (title|url|description)"?

And what bold title and normal description under that? Something like this:
<tooltip>
<b>Full title of Live Bookmark</b>
<br />
Full description of this Live Bookmark bla bla bla...
</tooltip>

I don't think we'd block the release for this but we would certainly consider
taking a fix if one happens.

possibly instead you could have a popout menu (like reading a folder) to show
links inside the description? this would be useful for the wikinews.org feed,
because it's just a blogger feed with the link to the wikinews post in each
post. as well, it'd be nice for 'more info' slashdot stories or any other such
site where the contents of the post are mainly for link value.
another extension of the popout menu is a 'popup' button at the bottom, so
instead of going to the site you click popup and in a popup window you see the
full text of the description, saving a page-load to read more. and yes, some
option somewhere to make the popup open in a new tab.

Let me just suggest an additional enhacement to be done with this (not a
replacement for what is already being discussed). Ok, maybe I'm too lazy to open
a different bug, but I think if somebody looks into one thing, it will be quite
easy to do the other.
When we go to Bookmark Manager, and expand the Live Bookmark in the Tree View,
we get three columns: Name, Location and Description. For some reason,
description is always empty. I think it should have the descriptions of items
contained in the RSS feed.
Perhaps this could solve the discussion going on in this bug: the tooltip shows
the full title and address, the descriptions go in the bookmark manager.
Notice it is a lot quicker to check out all the descriptions at once in the tree
view than to wait for lots of tooltips.

There's an extension which does it well : http://joliclic.free.fr/mozilla/boox/en/index.php
Maybe it could help fixing this bug (at least for the mockup).
Comment 17•17 years ago
|

If only Boox rendered HTML in the description, or at the very least stripped it. Other then that, I think that functionality this makes LiveBookmarks a whole lot more accessible.

On Windows XP it works (current version). But not on Linux (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009090217 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.14). So it does not seem to be a general Firefox issue but an implementation issue.
But I agree to the other comments: It's very annoying to see cropped titles only when going through the bookmark list with the mouse.

Summary: Display Bookmark (incl. RSS Live Bookmark) tooltip (title, description,...) on hover → Display tooltip when hovering Live bookmarks containers
Comment 21•15 years ago

Yes. And I didn't say that. I only said that I had the current version on Windows (which I could't check for the number at this time).
And you are right: After the update to 3.5 on Linux (did not work automatically) it's working there as well.
So actually I wonder why this ticket is still shown as NEW. As the main issue is resolved it should be changed to RESOLVED, shouldn't it? Additional enhancements could be put into a new ticket.
Kristian
Comment 22•15 years ago
|

Because the original ticket is not really clear if this is about tooltip on live bookmarks contents or the live bookmark itself, so i morphed to bug to cover what is missing (the latter).

The front-end team has decided that this is not a very useful change, so we'll not be fixing it.
