Build Identifier: version 0.9 (20041103)

When someone sends me a message which asks for a return receipt, it is marked as
unread even though I have selected it.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click an unread message which requires a return receipt
2. Choose to send the return receipt

Actual Results:
The message is marked as unread, even though I have clicked on it.

Expected Results:
The message should now be shown as read.

I have set up Thunderbird to mark a message as read after viewing it for zero
seconds (i.e. immediately after clicking it).

If someone sends me a message asking for a return recipt I can try out saying
"No" for sending it, and see whether the message is still left unread.

In fact, if you send me a few I'll see whether setting the delay to longer than
zero seconds prevents this bug.
The same thing happens if I click "Cancel" in the dialog box asking me whether
to return a receipt.
I've chosen a 2 second delay on marking a message as read, so if someone sends
me a message requesting a receipt I can check whether the same problem occurs.
Choosing a 2 second delay doesn't make any difference.

I've noticed the same problem with 1.0.7 on XP. I usually cancel the (damned) return receipts, but my message does not mark itself as read. Nor can I manually mark it as read by clicking the dot in the Read column. I must highlight another message and then come back to the problem one before it can marked as read (either manually or automatically).
I experienced the same problem with

Thunderbird
version 1.5 (20051201)

Time to mark message as read doesn't seem to matter.
I'm not seeing this happen with TB 2b1. Andy Balaam, please confirm -- if this is working as you expect, please mark the bug Resolved|WorksForMe.

In fact, I'm seeing the message marked as read before it's even been loaded in the message pane, which seems a bug in the opposite direction. xref bug 151244.
I can't tell whether this is working or not - with the latest Thunderbird (thunderbird-3.0a1.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2), even though I have "Ask Me" as the option for each situation with return receipts, I see no dialog when I click a message which asks for a receipt.

Should I log a separate bug, or is this known already?

That's working for me with 3a1-0125, Win2K. I don't think there's a bug about that.
I'm also having this exact problem with 1.5.0.9 on Windows.
The problem is still present in TB 2.0pre 2007021204 ...
I've configured TB to mark as read after 1 second

My mails are filtred from a particular inbox for the account to a subfolder into Local Folder.

* I receive the mail (unread)
* I select it --> the popup for return receipt appairs
* I don't choose yes or no, i wait and i see after 1 second the mail becoming "read'
* I answer to the popup (accept the receipt) and automatically the mail become mark as unread

PS: if i click on the green bullet to mark as read, nothing happens ... i've to click TWICE to mark as read ... so it seems that the display status is unread, but the internal status of the mail is read

Problem continues at Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.21) Gecko/20090403 SeaMonkey/1.1.16 Mnenhy/0.7.6.0

Settings: After two seconds, messages are marked as read.

What happens:

1. Select the message which asks for return receipt.
2. Wait for two seconds or more. Message ıs marked as read at the moment.
3. Choose "OK" to send the receipt.
4. After sending the receipt, the message becomes unread again.
