In the Thunderbird Program you will see a small symbol with the text “obj” on it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install http://thunderbird.dnsalias.net/downloads/beta/1.5b1/thunderbird-1.4.de.win32.installer.exe 2. Install the Extension http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/extensions/palmsync/1.5b1/palmsync.xpi 3. Change the Sync Options at HotSync to "Handheld overwrites Desktop" 4. Start a Sync Actual Results: The Thunderbird shows the Characters ä, ö, ü, ß like small boxes with the label "obj". Expected Results: The Thunderbird should show ä, ö, ü, ß Characters like ä, ö, ü, ß Characters.

this is in fact not a dupe of bug 237624. It is a regression starting with thunderbird 1.5. (As Sven indicates the 1.4 German version is equivalent to thunderbird 1.5b1.)
