Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5

I have checked previous bugs, and this seems to be similar, but not quite the same. I downloaded Firefox 1.5 and installed it. Everytime I open it I have a blank bar across the bottom portion of the screen. The other reported bugs seem to have text in the bar, mine does not. It has only one character, a red ^, on the left hand side of the bar. This bar remains when I go to other web pages. Following instructions from the other bugs, I downloaded Tabbrowser Preferences 1.2.8.7 After closing and reopening, it had no effect. I also tried uninstalling Firefox, then downloading it again, but the problem repeated itself.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Download Firefox 1.5
2.Open Firefox webbrowser
3.

Actual Results:
Browser opened with large blank bar at bottom of screen. A red ^ appears at the far left of the bar.

Expected Results:
Opened normally with a full display

I had used Firefox 1.0 previously with no problems.
Any other extensions installed apart from Tabbrowser Preferences
1.2.8.7? Did you have the extension "linky" installed?
Did not have linky installed... should I? Only preferences I have installed are Tabbrowser and Talkback
Does the issue go away if you start firefox in safe mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode_(Firefox)
The issue remains when I start Firefox in safe mode.
Tim, does the problem go away if you un-install the Tabbrowser extension? I know this is no solution , but just curious if it's causing this issue
The problem actually existed before I installed Tabbrowser... just to be sure I uninstalled it... problem still remained.
I'm having the same problem as Tim. I tried reinstalling and running in safe mode without success.
I have a similar problem, but can't find a bug on it.
Occasionally, after Firefox has been running for some time, I will notice a small gap between the Menu Bar and the Title Bar. This is tan gap. The menus and toolbars seem to have a background color that's grey on the left, and fades to this same color tan.
This gap appears to be almost the same size as the menu bar (a little smaller perhaps).
I tend to notice it when I have several tabs open, though I'm never quite sure when it appears... must be when I minimize and maximize the window or something.

Firefox version:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5

Installed Extensions:
Talkback 1.5
Google Toolbar for Firefox 1.0.20051122
IE View 1.2.7
Web Developer 0.9.4

I also tend to notice the flashing Bookmarks bug.

Try deleting the XUL cache file (see bug 314768 comment 19)

I think I figured out, that this bug is produced, when I open firefox or a new window of ff without having a connectition to the Internet.
so how do you fix this? large gray blank with red arrow on left? has nothing to do with starting mozilla with no internet connection. mine just started this afternoon when I opened mozilla.

what is the fix please?
In my case it was the internet connection an extension "NETCRAFT" produced this large bar. After disableing the extention the bar dissapears and ff is back to normal.
I have the same wide bar and the red caret on one of my setups with win xp pro sp2 nvidia 64m video using nvidia driver. Have changed settings with no change. Installed talkback, DOM inspector, Google Preview google toobar, Linky Adblock.
Reproducible always. New install leaves same problem. Bar is sensitive to sizing of tool bar height.

Another machine - new dell, xp home sp2 with onboard video has no wide bar.
My gray bar never came back after I uninstalled the Google toolbar. Don't know that's what others are seeing.
Fixed in bug 335755, but see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Gray_bar_below_status_bar in the meantime, until there's a release including that fix.
