I can only make it shrink by resizing the window to nothing -- and then only the status bar shows at the bottom (menus, location toolbar, etc. still at top). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.open the browser and look at it 2. 3. using the default theme. removed the forecastfox extension but that didn't help. wish I could attach a screen shot...

here's a snapshot of the browser window
This is most likely due to an extension. I had a similar problem that was resolved by uninstalling my extensions. Sorry, I didn't do one at a time, so I don't know which specific one caused the problem.

Reopening and marking as invalid for incidences of this issue that aren't caused by reporter. This issue is almost always caused by upgrading with an extension that doesn't handle the new code properly. The solution is to either update extensions, or uninstall the extenion at fault. It's not a bug in firefox.

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this? It is truly annoying. I've tried running in safe mode, and it isn't any better. I didn't add any extra extensions, so am in a pickle. Would truly hate to back to IE.

I resolved by uninstalling firefox and then deleting the \Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox folder. I also used regedit and deleted all references to firefox, but this may have been overkill. Problem was resolved when I then reinstalled ff1.5.

Some people also reportet, that it helps to delete local settings\appdata\Mozilla\Profile\xyz.default\cache and local settings\appdata\Mozilla\Profile\xyz.default\xul.mfl but uninstalling all extensions did not help. Because this bug is seen very often, it would help to know which extension is causing the problem and if there is a easy method to solve this problem without creating new profiles and deleting hidden files.

I ended up uninstalling Firefox (losing all my bookmarks in the process), and downloading the Mozilla suite instead. Basically it solved my problem, but I lost A LOT of info in the proccess, which distressed me a bit. Oh well.

Johnathan - it's not specific extensions, rather it's extensions that access(ed) a specific part of code that has been changed. Please keep in mind that bugzilla is not a support forum. If the solutions in comment #5 or #19 don't work for you, please use the support forums or irc.

It's one of the extensions that were grabbed from ff1.07, and probably not compatible with ff1.5. After uninstalling all extensions I have started safe mode, chose to reset all option. Than started ff1.5 (“normal” mode this time) and now it looks fine. I didn’t have to loose any bookmark, only to re-install now the extension.

in the program folder -> mozilla firefox/chrome m3ffxtbr.manifest seems to be a common file that causes this problem. I haven't been able to track down what puts it there yet.

I observed that too when I upgraded to FF2 RC1 and the symptoms are indeed the same as what used to be reported in bug 319319 - a gray zone with a red arrow below the status bar - however the cause is not the same. I did not have the manifest mentioned in the bug 319319, and could not see anything suspect in the chrome directory. I uninstalled all the extension (although most of them had been disabled during the install because they are not for FF2.0) - but upon restarting, the bar was still there. Finally I had to delete all the files of FF1.5 and reinstall FF2.0 - and it was Ok. I suggest that although the issue 'seems' (although I'm not too convinced as uninstalling the extension did not solve it) to be in extension and not in FF the issue should be mentioned in release notes. Still what surprised me is that, the extension version mechanism should prevent this to happen no? (actually as I said before all extension were disabled by the upgrade, except talkback and web developer) In conclusion I'm not sure it is invalid - it should not happen, even if it is due to a poorly written extension as outdated extension should not produce anything...

It all came from the 'Update Notify' extension. After uninstalling it and reopening the browser aeverything came back to normal.

Listen, everyone! It is not from an extension! My friend, who recently reformatted his hard drive, installed a fresh copy of Firefox 2.0 RC 1. The vertical space showed up. I couldn't find what in the chrome did that. It's there... and no extensions or themes were installed with the exception of the DOM Inspector and Talkback.

This red ^ shows up below the status bar with a lot of space, I uninstaller all plug ins and reinstalled firefox RC 2 and the error still occurred. Note I have no plugs at all so this IS a firefox bug, which someone earlier claimed it was only with plug ins that didn't work for the new firefox. I am on windows media center 2005. I downloaded and had this error on October 7.

I believe that this bug could be traced to a particular mirror or computer setup. There is no way that this bug can stay resolved as "INVALID", because there has been obvious proof of this problem. Three screen shots? That's definetly enough to look into. It is entirely possible that one of the mirrors is missing just one character in one .xul file in one small piece of chrome that's causing this all. I'll be testing the different mirrors Mozilla uses and be reporting back to this bug. -- ian

I can verify this one as well. I was doing work on my grandparent's computer, and upgraded from 1.0.4 to the 2.0RC2. The upgrade of course disabled all extensions, and I uninstalled most of them as well, but this space still appeared. I've never seen it before, whether 1.0.x, 1.5.x, 2.0beta, or even the 3.0 nightlies, and I've used mostly all the same extensions on all of them. In fact, this being my grandparent's machine, I have the lightest extension use of all, with only - Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.0.4 - Adblock Plus 0.7.1.2 - All-in-One Sidebar 0.7 RC 4 - DOM Inspector 1.8.1 - MR Tech Local Install 5.3 - Tab Mix Plus 0.3.0.61001 - Talkback 2.0 installed. I don't think it is extension related, as it appeared even before any of these were installed.

I just upgraded to the latest version of FF today (12/23/2007) & this problem appeared, so it is not resolved. I have: <menuitem ----------------^ This is below the status bar & remains no matter what I do other than minimize the page up to the address bar. I'm not much of a techie, so I have no idea where to even begin to deal with this. I've uninstalled FF, rebooted, installed FF, rebooted & still have the same problem. Any suggestions? I don't really want to go back to IE! John

You are using Trunk builds, are you? The problem still exist in Firefox 2.x and will not be fixed there, maybe you want to try Firefox 3 beta 2? See bug 335755 and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Gray_bar_below_status_bar Also, this is a bug tracker, not a support forum.

If FF3b2 is what is available for download right now, that is what I have. I know this is forum a bug tracker, but I haven't been able to find out where or how to contact support, all I get from the support links is forwarded to a faq page which led me here. Any other help would be greatly appreciated!!!! John

I solved the problem by removing my Firefox add-on "Browse Toolbars" HyperWords. As soon as this was removed, and I rebooted, my problem disappeared. I still use Firefox as my browser however.

OK, I had this problem (also affected bookmarks, not showing up in toolbar, or bookmark menu) I fixed by un-installing the Download Statusbar 0.9.6 extension (fixed both problems). Not sure if its a problem with that extension (others have cited different extensions as the cause) but removing it worked for me. I re-installed it afterwards and the problem did not return, so I would guess it was an error autoupdating this extension rather than a bug in the extension itself

Thank you for your diligent help. I am the person who reported this bug. I have followed all of the instructions to date. Un-installing the extensions and using every other recommendation has been no help. In fact, the problem is now worse. Now, I am very close to stopping all use of Firefox as every time I surf, Firefox "freezes." I then must exit Firefox and restart every time. The inconvenience of having every other page freeze coupled with the screen with 20% grayscale at bottom is no good. Please try to fix so I can return to Firefox as before. Thank you. S. Rogers

Hi. I had exactly the same problem but I had words in my grey area, and have just resolved it in the last few minutes. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425366 Run safemode and check disable all addons, make changes and restart. run firefox, mine then appeared normal. reenabled all addons through the tools menu and restarted all still normal. see my screenshots. hope this works for you. I have followed instructions given by Reuben to open in safe mode and disable all 3 of my extensions. Twice. This solution does work and problem with large grayscale area still exists. The screen shot attached to Reuben's comments shows exact problem I have. In addition, my Firefox "freezes" constantly causing me to restart over and over whenever I surf. Please help with solution. Thank you. S. Rogers
