When an FTP download is in progress, you can't read mail or news messages.

To reproduce:
1. Open mail and browser window
2. In browser, initiate FTP download
3. Switch to Mail window, select a folder, then a message

Actual result:
- If it's an IMAP folder, the header of the message displays, and the message
body is black.
- If it's a POP/local folder, the message area (including headers) is grey
- If it's a Newsgroup, selecting a message causes a hang, and Mozilla has to be

Expected result: message displays as usual.

Linux build 2000.03.15.12 nb1b

CC mscott and sspitzer for the network angle, especially news since it hangs.
Note, though, that it also happens on local folders.

changing summary from "Can't read mail while FTP download in progress". This is
a file download problem, not an FTP problem.

Part of same problem is that if d/l is started, but mailnews is not, then the

mailnews window won't appear till after the download has finished. Did something

get TOO threadsafe? :P

zach@math.berkeley.edu, did you accidently reported the same bug twice or is it
a different issue?
See bug 28370 Can't use mail while downloading file via FTP

Bug 28370 is indeed the same bug. Maybe Seth wants to keep this one since the
behavior is different--and slightly worse--for news? cc selmer who now owns the
other bug.

Richard - should just mark the other bug dupe of this one since this one is more

Ok. CC selmer, who owns the other bug. In the other bug I reported that the
IMAP log shows that the message is actually downloaded from the server, it just
isn't displayed in the message pane. This suggests that it is not a Necko
problem. Also, if you change folders, the contents of the new folder is not
displayed in the thread pane.

This is probably the right resolution, I'm just wondering if it's possible you
would only see this over a slow link?
