User-Agent: Opera/8.50 (Windows NT 5.1; U; de) Build Identifier: Mozilla 1.5 (20051201) In the Properties-dialog of folders, you can check the checkbox "Check this folder for new messages" (on the tab "General Information"). It does not work: The expected result on new mail entry should be that the folder's font would become bold and the number of new mails would be displayed in brackets, like on the INBOX-folder. This does not work on IMAP-accounts: there is no notification at all when new mail arrives in a different folder than in INBOX. This is bad, because there are mailservers which sort mail before Thunderbird accesses an account. So you have to check that folder manually from time to time - Thunderbird ignores the checkbox in its properties and stays calm as if no mail had arrived. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. If your mailserver does not pre-sort mail, move a message into a subfolder an mark it as unread 2. Start Thunderbird 1.5, go to the subfolders properties an check "check this folder for new messages" 3. Press the "Get Mail" button The subfolder won't become bold to show the arrival of new messages. Open the subfolder, and THEN it will become bold ann show the number... A little bit to late - the "Check this folder"-feature is inteded as a help so that man does not have to check all folders manually... Actual Results: I get angry several times a day because I get a lot of mail and Thunderbird always fails in beeing obedient to its settings... Expected Results: Please see above. I work with several IMAP-accounts - I do NOT know if this problem occurs with POP3-Accounts, too.
I'm having the same problem. I use procmail on my imap server to pre-sort mail into different folders. Thunderbird does not see the messages until i click on a folder, at which point the folder name turns bold and indicates the number of unread messages. I should point out that the "Steps to Reproduce" in the original reporter's comment doesn't work for me. The only way this happens for me is when my procmail filter puts new mail directly into a folder other than the inbox.

This does work for me. I have a IMAP account with server-side filtering (sieve) turned on that moves messages to my only IMAP directory and it works fine. Thunderbird goes *bling* everytime a new message goes in the dir. However, and I'm not sure if this is a new bug or not, message filters seems to not apply to the IMAP dirs, only to the Inbox. Since the messages I move to my IMAP dir are from a mailing list, I would like those from myself not be marked as new messages. This works fine for messages to the inbox but not to the subdirs.
I have tried both version 1.5.0.2 and latest build version 3 alpha 1 (20060515). The problem still exists.

I posted this in bug 288699, but maybe it helps here too. Are they duplicates? I have Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 running on two Mac OS X 10.4 computers, one at home and one at work. At home, the "Check this folder for new messages" option seems to work fine. At work, it never happens automatically. Most other settings should be identical between the two setups -- I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, but set both up using only GUI options and presumably would have picked the same ones both times. On my work computer which never does the automatic update, I tried deleting my entire Thunderbird preferences folder and letting it create a new one, but the automatic checking still didn't work. What other debugging steps can I take to provide more useful information in figuring out what's going on?
