page loads all elements visible; shows message in status bar: "Transferring data from 66.148.43.61..."; get spinning beach ball; eventually ball reverts to cursor, willaacknowledge clicks on tool bar, menus, etc. ; eventually beac ball re-appears. this does not happen with firefox. (1.5.0.1)

This is a dupe of some other general performance bugs we've got. The first thing I found was bug 303135, although I'm not totally sure that's an appropriate dupe.

Mike, Simon, anything interesting in this sample?  Is this more like what we see in bug 326871 or  the standard "animation/ticker/etc. slowdowns" bug 166932?
