However, Firefox wasn't in the Windows process listings, so it wasn't running. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. Wasn't able to reproduce. 2. 3. This was some kind of a profile-related problem. A quick & dirty fix: destroy (after backup) your local Firefox profile and the program loads normally.
When you destroyed the profile, did you update or remove profiles.ini ? That file describes where the profiles can be found. The misleading error message is bug 278860.

I am running firefox-3.6a1pre.en-US.win32.installer.exe 07-Apr-2009 11:31 I get this problem/message ALWAYS when I start Firefox, after I just closed it. but when I wait some seconds between closing and reopening it is fine for me.
I get the same in recent months, but it did not happen in the past. It seems that firefox sometimes is slow, or very slow, to close with high (50%) cpu usage. Slow could be ten seconds, very slow could be several minutes to never. Usually I use task manager to kill the process. The last time I just closed the error message window and tried again. It may be that the message is issued too soon. There used to be a similar problem with xp reporting that a network drive was unavailable, when the drive was still starting and was available on retry.
I have this problem with Firefox 3.6 with a large profile on a slow computer. (I'm not really surprised by this though and I don't mind since it's more a problem of the computer than of Firefox in my opinion;)
