If I open the engine selection drop-down menu and hover over it, a tooltip reading "Search Google" appears on the left side of the browser, under the leftmost tab.

(1) Tooltip should appear near the mouse location
(2) Tooltip should probably read something like "Change the active search engine"
FWIW, this is on a Ubuntu/Gnome desktop.

This is a combination of bug 336231 and bug 311653 (and maybe bug 313673). The solutions to those bug don't work on the branch because bug 147670 wasn't landed there.
There are too many choices to dupe this to.

Bug 311653 would have fixed this once 147670 was fixed on the branch, but bug 311653 was never landed on the branch, and its patch is likely stale now.
