Sometimes I can delete emails and folders. However, most of the time, nothing happens. I try multiple delete methods; none of which work.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select an email or a folder
2.Request to delete it
3.

Actual Results:
The email or folder is still there. No "are you sure you want to send to trash" message comes up.

Expected Results:
Item should be deleted.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.14; Win 2000 SP4

I offer one case that one cannot delete the an e-mail:

1) Set your compact mail box option to something low (Options / Advanced / Network & Disk Space / Disk Space checkbox).
2) Fill and empty your inbox so that Thunderbird asks do you wish to compact the folder.
3) Click on Cancel so that the question comes up again soon.
4) Now start reading and deleting and adding to the inbox. But make sure one or more e-mails are kept open. Use "Open message in new window".
5) You should be in reading an e-mail when the prompt to want to compact folder comes up again.
6) Accept to allow it to compact the folder.
7) Now you will not be able to delete any of the open messages from their delete button.
8) After compact folder has completed; you still cannot delete any of the open messages from their delete button.
9) You can delete the same message that is open from its say folder list.
10) If you close a deleted message as said in 9) then the message disappears.
11) If you close an open message and then reopen it from its folder list, it can be delete from its delete button this time.
ovidiu can you confirm?
I have the same problem. The odd thing is that there is no logic about when it is and when it is not possible to delete items. I have 3 email-accounts in TB and sometimes it appears that I can delete from one account but not from the other accounts. Restarting TB usually helps, not always.

Weird and annoying. Would be happy to see a fix.

BTW: I use a Dutch version of TB 2.0.0.18 (20081105) on an XP machine
Just had this happen again. When it happened, I made a copy of Inbox and Inbox.msf files, restarted Shredder, then compared the set (before deleting anything). Messages were now deletable, and the compared files were basically identical--nothing unusual in them.

I then again deleted some messages and tried to undue the deletions with Ctrl+Z. Deletions still worked, but undo would not.

So the question is: under what conditions might Thunderbird/Shredder prevent a file from being deleted or undeleted and what mechanism is responsible for this? Could this be a database or toolkit issue?
I cannot delete IMAP email from Thunderbird - v 2.0.019 - I get an error that says "The current command cannot succeed. The mail server responded [TRYCREATE]. The requested item could not be found. Thundrbird is picking up all my OUTLOOK 2007 IMAPPED mails and just staying there

HELP! I want to delte all of them (Same goes for SENT ITEMS).

@Mike in Philly: First make sure those emails do not already exist in your Trash. Thunderbird is bad for this. You may have to empty your Trash or purge already deleted IMAP mail and then try again.

If you are still having problems after that, checkout these resources:

Reporters, any response to comment #8 (IU's suggestions)? Also, does it occur in Thunderbird 3 Beta 2?

Folks, I am having such a bad time with Thunderbird 3.0b3 that it appears like a brand new product and at alpha stage.
1) Am I missing a new setup or some new DLL? Because things as elementary as Reply Forward and Junk are duplicated when a message is open.
2) When Inbox opens I see the last 5 e-mails on top of my window (all below is blank) and after the scrolling it never goes to that state (last message is always on the bottom after scrolling and will not move higher up).
3) I do run the old version 2.0.0.14 and 3.0b3 interchangeably to see the differences; is that a problem?
4) The new TAB that appears can hardly be called useful. Or if it is I have failed to discover its usage. Except that after creating a few and deleting them (except the leftmost one that I cannot delete); the you can get into a situation that the tab says "Sent" and your left column is on INBOX and highligted. Anybody's guess which e-mail list is displayed on the right.

Please put me straight if I am left behind on this version.

Please file a separate bug for this.

ditto

It should not be. Except if you change passwords - as the new way password are dealt with is not compatible with 2.x - so if you don't change them it should not be an issue.

Tabs are work in progress .. the feature is not finished yet.
I also cannot delete any selected emails. I have tried using the delete button above the inbox and the one in the tool bar at the top of the screen. Sometimes I can click and drag an item in to the trash, which moved by itself to the bottom of my folder list recently. I cannot use the "delete mail marked as junk" option in the tool drop down either. It highlights them and leaves them there. It this point my box is getting pretty big. HELP!!!

UI, are you implying in comment 8 that you don't see the problem in v3 beta?

Reporters, (repeating UI's question) can you reproduce when observing the factors pointed out in comment 8??

Note: Reporter's email address is dead.

Not sure. I haven't experienced this bug in a long time, though it's possible it still exists.

Maybe someone else on the CC list has better info.
Parkhideh comment 1 regarding compact is a great description, however I believe it is covered in other bugs that mention compact.

given comment 0's vagueness and the lack of data connecting the various reports, I am closing this incomplete.
