User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060717 BonEcho/2.0b1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060717 BonEcho/2.0b1 With "Select new tabs opened from links" option unchecked middle-clicking a link will open a new non-focused tab but it will not have a parent tab set. Closing the new one will bring the user to the rightmost tab instead of the previously selected one. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Uncheck "Select new tabs opened from links" from Tools -> Options... -> Tabs 2. Middle-click a link (a new tab will open in background) 3. Switch to the new tab and then close it Actual Results: The rightmost tab is selected. Expected Results: The last select tab should be selected. It looks like the new tab will loose the "parent" even with "Select new tabs opened from links" checked just moving around tabs.

If I understand this bug right then the Last Tab extension has this behaviour. I tried it for some days but uninstalled it finally. You get this situation: - Open a Google search and middle-click on 10 links so you have 11 tabs - Go to the first link (opened in the second tab), read it and close - Then you go back again to the first tab with Google search, and not to the next link (to the right) that you have opened. This is also a pain if you have set browser.tabs.loadFolderAndReplace to false. Finally you get accustomed to everything, but reading my tabs from right to left, I would not prefer it :).
I did the Ria's Google testcase and I started to think that Firefox is working as designed and that it is not a bug.

No I think this is bug, as tabs should work like windows works ie, if you open 3 firefox windows, then start browse with one of them, open a link into a new window, then close the window and you will be back at the window what you were originally browsing. Now firefox opens new tab from link and when it is closed it will show you the last tab or the rightmost tab, not the last used tab like I did show with windows.
See bug 374165 for a relevant suggestion.
