My bookmarks are organized and appear in the correct order in the "Organize Bookmarks" dialog, however when I just select Bookmarks at the top to select one, they are in a seemingly random order.   I am unable to sort.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have a given set of bookmarks saved.
2. Select Bookmarks.
3. Notice that they are not in alphabetical order.

Actual Results:  
Bookmarks are in a random order.

Expected Results:  
All bookmarks order are sorted based on what the user did in the Organize Bookmarks dialog.

Resetting the sort direction as recommended in  https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=337160#c2 fixed this issue for me.

If you notice, I had specified OS X in my bug report already.

I am having lots of trouble with organizing my bookmarks as well.  For example, when I drag a toolbar bookmark from one location to another, it ends up re-ordering all my bookmarks in an unexpected way.  Hard to explain, but incredibly frustrating bug... I can't get my bookmark toolbar organized in the order I want!  Only on OS X as far as I can tell.

I, too, am experiencing this sort issue.  When accessing the bookmarks via the pulldown menu, they are NOT sorted alphabetically.  They DO show as sorted correctly when selecting 'Organize Bookmarks'.

Running Mac OS X v10.4.10
Firefox v2.0.0.4

I don't seem to recall having this issue when using Firefox on my Windows machines.

I can confirm the original report by Craig Marker as well as by Ian Hergest. I sort the bookmarks alphabetically in the bookmark manager, but once I close the bookmark manager window, the bookmarks menu shows as if I did absolutely nothing. It's very frustrating. 

I reinstalled Firefox and it didn't solve the problem. 

Firefox 2.0.0.8
MacOS X 10.4.10

I'm seeing the same behavior with:

Firefox 3.0b5
Mac OS 10.4.11

Using:

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008061004 Firefox/3.0

System Version:	Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)
Kernel Version:	Darwin 8.11.1

Here is the symptom:

From pull down menu Bookmarks | Organize Bookmarks...
Window title is "Library".
With "Bookmarks Menu" selected in left pane.
Select a sequence of bookmarks by Click on bottom of sequence, and Shift-Click on top of sequence.
Click on highlighted list of bookmarks and move *upwards* past folders and at least 1 separator.
The order of the sequence of bookmarks will be reversed.

After using Organize Bookmarks > Sort > A>Z Sort Order, the bookmarks appear to be in the correct order. However, when viewed them from the Bookmarks menu, they are not alphabetically sorted.

this is expected, Organize Bookmars > Sort is for sorting the library view, not to sort bookmarks permanently. 
So sort them you have to right click the Bookmarks menu folder and choose Order by name

I'm using Firefox 3.0.1 with Mac OS 10.5.5. One of the problems I'm having is that a right click has no effect. Selecting the Bookmarks drop-down menu, and then right-clicking on one of the folders does not produce another menu with the option "order by name," or anything else for that matter.

On the other hand, I'm running Firefox 3.0.3 on the WinXP side of my MacDuo (under Parallels Desktop), and a right-click on one of the folders in the Bookmarks menu does produce another menu with the option "sort by name."
