load the inbox, go into threaded mode. expand a thread, and click on the little "dot" (for unread or read) and see how all msgs under that msg change state, too. at least the UI changes, I don't think they are actually marked as read. I noticed this when I was trying to trim down my css / xul for the new subscribe dialog. I was following hyatt's example in threadpane.css and threadpane.xul.
adding waterson to the cc list. I have a feeling this might end up as xul template bug.
I'm not seeing this with a build from this morning.

Could you double-check the style rules that you're using? Since a "child" in a thread is actually a content child, it could be the case that style is being inherited from the topmost <treeitem>.

To the user, this appears as data loss. Messages they've never looked at become marked read in the UI. If they attempt to fix it, the messages _actually_ become marked read in the database. If they pass up this opportunity to read them, they'll never be reminded of them again. Ever.
