But when I do forget and select a block of the old message to delete, upon hitting delete the whole message disappears. I then go into the deleted message and call up the file again and usually I remember to click on Reply. But once in a while I forget a second time. And this time the message is gone forever. I realize mistakes deserve punishment, but that's a bit too severe. Walt Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. go to "trash" folder pretend to angry at the message 2. think of something nasty to say, and highlight the unneeded text 3. hit delete 4. now try to type what you wanted to say. Nothing. It's gone. Actual Results: Complete deletion which cannot be retrieved. Expected Results: Instead of deleting the message, put up an error message as follows... "You've highlighted a text for deletion. You then hit Delete. But that's dumb because you are in a deleted message folder." If you want the whole message deleted, hit the delete key again.
similar enough to dupe to bug 330576?

Summary: deletion of text deletes the whole message → prompt before deleting message from trash if text of message is selected

I sympathize with this, however I don't think we can accurately use the fact that text of the message was selected for a prompt like this. However I do think that if you select a message in the Trash folder and press delete you should be prompted because you are about to permanently delete this message. Also we can take that time to remind the user of their trash deletion policy, just so they know they don't have to clean up trash manually. Likely there is a bug about this out there already...

Summary: prompt before deleting message from trash if text of message is selected → Disable "delete-key" (from deleting message) if message is open for reading.
I have two suggestions both quite simple: 1- Add a confirmation dialog "Confirm deleting this message ?" This would solve the problem in a drastic way. 2- But if you select text and hit Del key when reading a message, the best behavior would be alerting: "Sorry, this text is read only, you can not edit it"
