I'm not able to reproduce this in current bookmarks builds.

Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a3pre) Gecko/2007031605 Minefield/3.0a3pre

no crash/freeze with this build.

but in error console,
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "ServiceManager::GetService returned failure code:" nsresult: "0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/places/controller.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 1530" data: no]

and no bookmarks, cannot import bookmarks from files.
maybe another bug.
are you using the windows installer build from the experimental tinderbox?

using zip build, not try with installer build.

It looks like dup of bug 374161.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a3pre) Gecko/2007032504 Minefield/3.0a3pre

nothing in error console.
and no crash.

so should change Status to "WFM" ?
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a4pre) Gecko/2007032604 Minefield/3.0a4pre [enable-places-bookmarks]

happened again.

in error console,
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "ServiceManager::GetService returned failure code:" nsresult: "0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/places/controller.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 1439" data: no]
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "ServiceManager::GetService returned failure code:" nsresult: "0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/places/utils.js :: anonymous :: line 88" data: no]
with 0401 zip build.

create new profile, this bug happens.

repeat start/exit Minefield, till bookmark-backup is created.
after bookmark-backup is created, this bug does not happen.

I think that, at the moment, the best dupe is bug #374139. When that's fixed, I'll bet a lot of these bugs go away.

Going by my experience, anyone not building their own or getting a binary from someone who is (haven't noticed any public builds, any volunteers?) just gets non-functional UI, failed assertions, JS errors and crashes, including this bug, which I've also noticed (at least intermittently), bug #374161 that I filed before I figured out it was probably just noise until a better build showed up, etc.

Or maybe that's just me. Has anyone had better luck with a tinderbox build lately? URL it came from?

WFM, as of the evening (~6pm PDT) of 4 APR 07.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
