HTML 4.0 defines a cite attribute for blockquote (used in Mailnews for e.g. quoting the previous mail), which content is an URI and specifies the source resource of the quote. We will send out this attribute in Mozilla Mailnews, see bug 29653. There should be a convient way to access the source of the quote, e.g. by click (like a normal <a> link) or context menu. It should open the source just like we open URLs in msgs.
What happens to nested quotes?
The most-nested quote (under the cursor) is relevant (regardless, which solution we choose).
Not making this release.

Oh well, as long as I'm looking at this bug I'll move it from M20 to FUTURE.

This also goes for cite attribute on Q, INS, and DEL. See also bug 1996 about the lack of support for the longdesc attribute.
The sourcepage of the quote is now avalible from the "properties" window from bug 1995, so this can be marked as fixed now
No, see 3. paragraph of initial descr..
the patch on bug 1996 should fix this, push for review...
> the patch on bug 1996 should fix this It didn't. Note that this bug is about Mailnews and should offer a convient and easily-discoverable UI. - Bug 37653 will make this feature more useful.
Can we get this looked at for 1.0? It'd be nice to have it work in the browser.
reassigning to varada.

you should make it so that blockquotes, ins & del (in block form) have a linke appear in the lowwer-right hand corner of the blockquote/ins/del when the mouse hovers over it for 1 sec, that would say "original" for blockquote and "why it changed" (or somthing similar) for ins/del. You should also have it accesable via a context-sensitive menu with a similar title. On top of that you could save the blockquotes/ins/del/q from the context-sensitive menu, and you could have "add to bookmarks" which would save it in a special folder, with an automaticly generated filename, and then add a bookmark to that file. When saving you could use this format. (change [ and ] with tag thingos)
TITLE-ATTRIBUTE
[blockquote] CONTENT [/blockquote] [!-- exchange for del/ins/q --] [a href=" HREF-ATTRIBUTE "] HREF-ATTRIBUTE [/a] [!-- if href is a mailto: then remove mailto: bit from inside [a] tags --]

This should now be possible (for message-IDs) in Thunderbird, with gloda. (It wasn't possible in all these years.)
