Improve error message for a failed connection (network error) during update
All trunk builds are incompatible with Vista RC1. They are all unable to connect with the internet. They seem like they are in offline mode. Needed to reproduce: Vista RC1, latest trunk build of Firefox or Thunderbird or Sunbird Steps to reproduce: 1. Start Product 2. Go to "Check for Update" 3. Download Update 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 What should have happened: Firefox should have shown that an update was available and user should have been able to download the update. What Happens: After pressing check for update software update window pops-up and shows error message... "There were problems checking for, downloading or installing this update. Calendar could not be updated because:" "AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)" Build ID: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9a4pre) Gecko/20070402 Calendar/0.6a1
This bug relates solely to the AUS and its inability to auto update and its inability to connect to the internet or any type of network
If there's a more general problem (not being able to connect at all, bug 376062), what leads you to believe that this isn't just another manifestation of the underlying issue?
Well, I found it strange that the AUS tells me that the reason it can't update is because if an XML error.
If that's the only reason you filed the bug, this is probably a dupe of bug 368361.

agreed, this is not the error I'd expect upon network failure. my gut wonders if this is NSPR related, and we start the connection, but fail to get any data we'll present this error, instead of a better error. perhaps since we establish the connection, but fail to get any data, we get a zero byte snippet. I'll investigate. note to matthaeus: Vista RC1? Can you try Vista RTM?

> If that's the only reason you filed the bug, this is probably a dupe of bug > 368361. Actually, let's keep this open (or open a new bug) about improving the error message ["AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)"] on this sort of network error. That other bug covers some different improvements that schrep suggested.
(In reply to comment #6) > Actually, let's keep this open (or open a new bug) about improving the error > message ["AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)"] on this sort of network error. Sure, re-summarizing accordingly.
Summary: AUS incompatible with Vista RC1 → Improve error message for a failed connection (network error) during update
note to self, to reproduce the problem that mattheaus was seeing, do this: in http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/nsprpub/pr/src/md/windows/w95sock.c#178 force an error, close the socket, and return -1. When that sort of network error happens, we should handle it better in the application and present a better error message. For the list of error message, see http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/mozapps/update/updates.properties#70 although we might use a different error message, one that implies network problems.
