I got the following message when I tried to see if any of my previously installed addons had been updated:

AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Click Thunderbird Help
2.Click Check for Updates
3.Received message:  There were problems checking for, downloading, or installing this update.  Thunderbird cannot be updated because:

I'm seeing this often if I update immediately after starting the application. Just do it a second time, and the problem is solved.

I haven't been having the problem for a while now.  My PPC eMac, running early versions of Thunderbird (2.0.0.0 - 2.0.0.10 or thereabouts) had to be updated manually via downloading and installing the newer version of the software.

Since I moved to a Core 2 Duo Intel iMac, I haven't had a problem.  I'm now using Thunderbird 2.0.0.19 and it updated on it's own perfectly.

Thanks for all the help.  You can mark this bug report as resolved.  (Actually, I had forgotten all about it...  Good memory but kinda short... Sigh...)
