I use IMAP mail and I have it set to "mark as deleted".  It be useful if a filter option enabled one to filter on "deleted" status (is or is not deleted) much like one can filter on junk status.

For instance, one might want to temporarily hide the deleted messages w/o expunging them or vice versa just see the deleted messages to make sure one isn't expunging something one really needs.
