This is a feature request for the main reason that I still use Eudora instead of Thunderbird, and I'm hoping (though not very optimistically) that Penelope can address it.

I haven't seen any similar bugs filed, though the tabbed-browsing ones (e.g.https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362419) are somewhat related.

Currently, my Eudora window is laid out with four different Mailbox windows, which are not maximized.  I've aligned them so that, if they're in the right order, I can see the bottom few lines of each mailbox.  As a result, when new mail comes in, I can immediately read the subject lines.  More importantly, if there's unread mail in one of them, or if there's read mail that I should reply to, it's _right there_, visible, and I remember it.  And, with just a quick glance I can see if there are a lot of un-dealt-with messages in the box or not.

This is pretty critical to my methods of working.  If a mailbox window isn't open, I forget to look at it, and often don't get around to replying to the messages in it.

Thus, I'd really like to see an equivalent MDI interface for the Mailbox windows in Thunderbird.  Ideally, it would include the Message windows as well, but that's secondary.  Without it, I shall probably keep sticking with my old outdated Eudora until it completely stops working.

We have had many discussions, both internally and with key people at Mozilla, and we do not believe there is any way to implement the MDI like in the old Eudora. Likely the best we are going to get is a tabbed interface.

Marking this is a duplicate of 375993. You might wish to vote for that bug....
