When a user is composing a new message or editing a draft, the "Format" menu on the menubar appears twice as "Format Format". If either "Format" spot is selected, a menu drops down off of the leftmost one. Both are selectable to cause that though.

This was found in Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.9) Gecko/2007103105 Thunderbird/2.0.0.9 (the 2.0.0.9 RC1) on OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

After a restart, it went away. When the second "Format" is there, it wipes out the "Options" menu.

On some investigation, if you are editing a message and change the formating back and forth between html, plain text, and the other options a few times, you can loose the "Format" menu item, lose the "Options" menu item or get the problem I show above.

Bad.

One scenario:

1. Create message and click in main message body
2. Go to "Options" -> "Format" -> "Plain Text Only"
3. Go to "Options" -> "Format" -> "Rich Text (HTML) Only"

Result: Menu across top now has "Options" to the left of "Format". It is normally "Format" to the left of "Options".

4. Go to "Options" --> "Format" --> "Plain Text Only"

Result: "Options" menu disappears from menubar. Only "Format" remains (there can be only one!).

Second scenario:

3. Go to "Options" -> "Format" -> "Plain Text Only"

Result: "Format" menu disappears from menubar. 

4. Go to "Options" -> "Format" -> "Rich Text (HTML) Only"

Result: Menu across top now has "Options" to the left of "Format".

Tchung has reproduced this on OS X 10.4 as well so this is not a Leopard issue.

This does not reproduce in Windows.

It does reproduce in TB 2.0.0.6 on Tiger and Leopard.

The "Format appearing twice" in the menu bar repros 100% on Mac 10.4.10 using these steps.

1. Launch TB, compose mail window
2. Goto Options > Format > and choose Plain Text Only
** Notice "Format" menu dissapears
3. Goto Options > Format > and choose Auto Detect
4. Goto Options > Format > and choose Plain Text Only
** Now Notice "Options" menu dissapears
5. Close the compose mail window.  Dont Save mail.
6. Launch Compose window again
** Verify Double "Format" menu on top

I don't see it on Windows either. How far back does it go on Mac? Tbird 2.0? Tbird 1.5? Tbird 1.0?

If this is in the currently shipping version on a current OS (that is, not a regression and not a Leopard-only problem) then this is just a bug we triage for a future release, not a 2.0.0.9 stop-ship bug.

Two issues I don't see on Win XP running the 2.0.0.9 candidate:
1. The double format noted in Comment 7 does not occur
2. If you follow tchung's STR in Comment 7 exactly, the options menu does not disappear.

Options->Format->Plain text - I believe the expected result here is that the format menu should disappear, because you have selected plain text.

Btw, I've seen this happen in SeaMonkey as well. I bet this has something to do with how the native menu handles stuff. It would be interesting to see if this happens on trunk (1.9).
