When I set up a new profile, each time I have to manually change the prefs to say:
1. When I mark messages as junk, Delete them.
2. Mark messages determined to be junk as read.
I think these are reasonable defaults and would propose that we set them as such.
If there is a reasonable concern that some novice users might be confused for a moment when spam mail messages go away (item #1), then I would propose we modify the "You are turning on the spam engine" warning to include a "Delete messages when I mark them as junk" checkbox. That way I never have to go into the prefs when I set up new profiles.
I still think item #2 should be on by default in any case.

I think 1. would be dangerous for new users, best to let them set it them selves.
I have 2. set to false my self. How else would I notice I've got new junk mail to eye through? (And it's not an account but global setting.)

I'm afraid this bug looks like wontfix, based on Magnus comment #1.
1) We can't make deletion the default. Perhaps we could make "remove to junk folder" the default.
2) Marking read for messages that TB has automatically determined junk is also not a good idea, as Magnus says. Marking read for msgs that are manually set to junk might be ok, but would need a new bug (do we even have the UI for that?).

I am not in favor of junk settings ever deleting email, even manually. I would be more likely to vote to remove that option than to make it the default.
The bug is confused by multiple requests, but as it stands WONTFIX.

I wouldn't mind taking on number 1 but I think we'd need to offer some options. The first time you mark a message junk it would be good to ask what to do with messages you mark junk.
(o) Move to Junk
( ) Delete
( ) Nothing
This would help a lot of of user questions I see about trouble changing the Junk preferences to remove messages marked junk.

+1 on this idea.
But "nothing" isn't actually nothing, but rather something like "keep message in folder".

I started on this last night so I should upload this out of my queue before it gets lost.
What I have is a different dialog which shows the options for Junk Mail manual handling. I haven't spent time making the dialog look like how I would want it to look. Currently it offers you the choice of Move vs. Delete and if you cancel it turns off the manual junk mode.

I shouldn't be the assignee for these bugs. Filter against clarkbfilter to delete all these from your emails.
