This behaviour is described extensively in bug 246078, and although that bug is filed as "verified fixed" a lot of people are still experiencing this problem.
When firefox is not open and one clciks a link in an e-mail message or doubleclicks on an html file, the file opens in firefox (as it should) but windows displays an error message reading:
"Windows cannot find '<url>'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click on any hyperlink in a document.
OR
2. Doubleclick any html-file

I have a new computer with vista installed. At first I did not have the problem at all. It started occurring either after installing the latest ff update (2.0.0.13) OR after installing (and uninstalling) these two extensions
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006 and
http://max.subfighter.com/flv/downloader.php.
Summary: File accosiation not working correctly. File is opened but with error message. → File association not working correctly. File is opened but with error message.
I am getting this same error message also...

I will try the resolution for Bug 254525.

I am also curios to see if the fix discussed below works for VISTA?
I have a .reg file that should fix the problem on affected systems:

I can verify with the OP that it is not related to the two add-ons that were installed. I have seen this issue on all 3 of my computers (2 XP and 1 Vista). Non of them have those add-ons. I have seen this bug occur after each Firefox automatic update. A removal of the DDEEXEC entries in the registry as mentioned in other bugs/forums resolves the issue until next update.

I really hope somebody at Mozilla will see this and actually respond/pay attention to the bug. It has be plaguing Firefox since version 1.x (or before) and is still seen in the FF3 betas.
See these related bugs:

bug 388381
bug 388950
bug 396815
bug 137363

All of them are showing the same issue of multiple windows or window/error.

This evening's update to version 2.0.0.14 has once again caused this bug to re-appear on all my computers. Any attempt to open a desktop shortcut to a URL, or a link within an Outlook email, triggers an error, like this:

"Windows cannot find "http://....". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

The URL does, in fact, open up, but only after this annoying "error" message appears. This problem has been going on for well over a year...I can't believe it's been around this long, and reported by so many people, and seems either ignore, or denied (some of the other bug reports are marked as Verified Fixed).

The only way to resolve it is to delete the DDE info in file associations.

Note: if FireFox is already running, the error does not appear. It only appears if FireFox is NOT currently running.
Version: unspecified → 2.0 Branch

I think this was fixed by the removal of DDE so resolving as wfm. If you are still experiencing this please comment in this bug or better yet please file a new bug. Thanks!
