For latvian locale we don't have any new links to add in context with the links that already are in the default english getting started page.

Reopening. I'm sure we can find some fine replacements for en-US defaults :)

First try: Raivis, does any of the Alexa's Top 100 in Latvia <http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?cc=LV&ts_mode=country&lang=none> look like good candidates for any of the four categories: Work, Learn, Play and Connect?

  google docs - Google documents
  1188.lv - info service
  gismeteo.ru - weather service
  rigassatiksme.lv - Riga city public transportation schedules (can be excluded if three sites are posted)

Play:
  YouTube - latvians use youtube
  Miro - Miro is a usefull thing also
  krabjeim.lv - entertainment site with jokes and games

Learn:
  Wikipedia 
  Delfi.lv - biggest latvian news portal
  lasi.lv - social news aggregator
 
Connect:
  Draugiem.lv - Most popular social network in Latvia - mostly latvian speaking latvians
  One.lv - Popular social network - mostly russian speaking latvians
  Inbox.lv - mail portal with lots of stuff in it.

This one looks OK to me, but I wonder if we can't find something better-suited for the "Work" category. In many locales, we choose here a professional networking site like LinkedIn or xing. Is any of these sites popular in Latvia, or maybe do you have a popular equivalent?

Not sure about this one. I'm under the impression that some picture may be going a bit too far. Any music-themed sites we might want to choose instead?

I love this idea! :) Is cooking something special in Latvia? Or is this site promoting traditional Latvian food? I'm asking because I like collecting these great ideas and I'm thinking of making a blog post about them eventually :)

I have a real trouble with this one. It seems to be the most popular website in Latvia in general, and yet you need to get an invite to access it, which is kind of not what we're looking for and want to encourage (or at least, this is my understanding). 

Raivis, Pascal, Pike, Seth: what do you think about this?

AFAICT, you can sign in here without an invite. So this seems OK to me.

Is this a portal with news and webmail? Maybe we can link to ss.lv here instead (a bit like we do in en-US linking to Craig's List)?

We have excluded Tuenti, the most popular social network in Spain from the es-ES build for this reason, it is only available with an invite.
meteo.lv VS LinkedIn - I agree that meteo.lv is a bit far from "work". Some people may use LinkedIn in Latvia, but I wouldn't say it is popular. We can go with it, will give latvians something new and it is "work".

about krabjiem.lv. This may not be the best but I think it is one of the most decent ones. Others are related to large dating sites or something like that. We can replace it with http://www.last.fm it is music related and somewhat popular in Latvia.

lasi.lv - there is a more popular ste - http://tribine.lv, but I chose lasi.lv as it aggrergates stories from tribine and other sites. It is more comprehensive. IMO tribine.lv is a good substitution for it.

Don't know much about receptes.lv, do not use it yet myself. :)

About draugiem.lv. We can link to facebook.com instead. It is not as populas ar draugiem.lv yet but many latvians are in facebook. 

Inbox.lv VS ss.lv - I don't think ss.lv is a good idea. it is just a classifieds site. I think we should link to inbox here as it provides more different services and would be more usefull to the people.

I would like to another site.  Facebook seems like a good option.
Can anyone check out and give comments / green light for:
- last.fm in "play"
- tribine.lv instead of lasi.lv

I'm still not sure about inbox.lv. It's like linking to yahoo.com for en-US. I agree that it offers many different services to users, but I'm not sure if it's enough "Connect". This was the reason why I suggested ss.lv. A different idea: are there any good sites with reviews or local restaurants and other service points for Latvia?
To replace inbox.lv there is 
- http://vietas.lv/ - this is a site of a lot of places in Latvia (restaurants, campings, etc). It is not a community site, but there is info about places.
- http://www.notikumi.lv - this is a site that collects info about different events in latvia.

I would perfer vietas.lv as it has more info.
Vietas.lv looks good indeed. Let's do it :)
