Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9pre) Gecko/2008042305 Minefield/3.0pre - Build ID: 2008042305

Seen problems:
- No icons for add-ons after update (first seen during update to NoScript 1.6)
- clicking the options button in the add-ons manager causes a freeze of Firefox
- problems which look like extension conflicts (since last week)

After deleting all the extensions.* file in the profile directory and starting Firefox, not all add-ons are listed in the add-ons manager, sometimes even none (I have more than 130 installed).
In the extensions.log, you can find:
2008-04-24 00:49:43 - ExtensionManager:_finishOperations - failure, catching exception - lineno: 8663 - file: undefined - [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED) [nsIRDFRemoteDataSource.Flush]"  nsresult: "0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED)"  location: "JS frame :: file:///F:/Software/Browser/Firefox/Trunk/components/nsExtensionManager.js :: anonymous :: line 8663"  data: no]
If you disable the Avira Antivir Guard before starting Firefox, you won't see this problem.

Fast analysis: Mossop: Archaeopteryx: Something is screwing up file accesses, but I've not got much of an idea what I've never heard of it happening before

Avira Antivir Personal Edition is free and in Germany the most often used antivirus software.

Mossop: is this something we can fix on our side, or is the AV app just blocking our access to files, at which point this is Tech Evang.
I believe that the AV app is just seeing us write out extensions.rdf and then deciding it must scan it. Unfortunately during a startup we write out extensions.rdf a bunch of times (bug 401229) and one of those times the AV app still has the file open for scanning, so it fails.

There are a couple of possible changes that could make the EM perform better. Only flushing once during the startup would likely fix it, or just ignoring errors during forced flush could be done (the datasource should automatically flush itself on shutdown anyway). But I wouldn't like the idea of doing either of these things at this stage, unless we come across more widespread issues. Scanning files after use is pretty common in AV apps so I'm not sure why we wouldn't have hit this before tbh.

Switching to sqlite in the future would likely solve this anyway since the db would be opened once and not closed during the lifetime of the app.
--> Tech Evang

Dave, can you file some follow-up bugs on the optimizations if you think that's something that we might want to invest in?

Reaching out to Avira...
Depends on: 431065
I've been receiving more reports of similar issues to this one, bug 431065 has further details.
Confirmed by Avira as a bug with their filter driver associated with the move operation. Fix is underway, and is planned for next release, which has a planned date of July 10th, 2008.

Maybe add a Sumo article/note for it?

Should at least get into the (German?) release notes.
Nice, that should fix my problems with doing cvs check-outs, too ;-)

Reopening bug, problem is still presents, but not that aggressive. I can't install the Peers extension and after copying a profile, two or three of 13 installed extensions request a restart to finish installation.
