User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.13) Gecko/20080313 SeaMonkey/1.1.9 (Ubuntu-1.1.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu1) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.13) Gecko/20080313 SeaMonkey/1.1.9 (Ubuntu-1.1.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu1) I have attempted several times to install the Weather Channel 20080326 addon (at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/4613) with no success. When I click on the button I continually get the error message: "Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plugin." Can I do anything to fix this? I would rather have the ForecastFox addon, but it's not available for SeaMonkey. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/4613 2. Click "Add to SeaMonkey" 3. Get the error message "Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plugin."
Seamonkey doesn't support the Opensearch search plugins at the moment (bug 410613). This should not be listed as SM addon.

Not only is there no compatibility info listed for search plugins (just filed bug 439341 for that), but all search plugins are viewable from the SeaMonkey AMO page. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/browse/type:4 has "Browse Search Engines" and "All Search Engines" links Correct me if I'm wrong, but that shouldn't be there at all.

I guess I'm a little simple minded, but I wasn't aware that Forecastfox even *was* a search plug-in, and I was under the impression that SeaMonkey *is* a Mozilla-based browser. Matti: thanks for the info/link. I checked it out, but for some reason, when I tried to install forecast to SM, it went through the motions, then gave me an error of "canceled" without installing.

No, Forecastfox is not a search plugin. It's a regular Firefox extension. The author just hasn't made a version for SeaMonkey. As for the error message, it is a little inaccurate indeed. What you need to install an OpenSearch plugin is a browser that supports OpenSearch plugins (surprise ;)) and that would be Firefox, or even MSIE7. SeaMonkey, however, is not one of them at the moment.
The Weather channel addon is an Opensearch plugin, Seamonkey only supports the old sherlock search plugins, Firefox supports Sherlock and the new opensearch plugins. bug 410613 is there for adding the opeansearch support in Seamonkey. I pointed you to a version of Forecast which could working with Seamonkey, i didn't test it. Too bad that it doesn't seem to work for you. Seamonkey 2.0 will come a weeks/months after Firefox3 and it should include many missing features and Opensearch is on the list that should be hopefully included and it really possible that addons like Forecast will work aqain with Seamonkey. This bug here is for the weather channel opensearch plugin that is not working. That it's not working itself is no bug but it should not be listed in the AMO site as Seamonkey addon.
LilithD: Not quite sure why you changed it back to PC/Linux. This is not a Linux-specific bug; Windows/Mac/BSD/etc users can see these incompatible search plugins on AMO's SM pages, too. The bug fields apply to the whole context of the bug, not just the reported instance. By the way, this "you need a Mozilla-based browser" error should be clarified, too. And, frankly, we also need to make it more clear that search plugins are not extensions. Everything was muddied together as "add-ons" to simplify things, but sometimes you need more info. :/

Forward duping to bug 502473 as it covers the more general issue that search plugins are listed for all applications regardless of support. SeaMonkey is just more noticeable than the birds, though on preview it's worse now.
