Opening bug to track migrating documentation from www.mozilla.org. Eric, let me know if this content should be moved to MDC or if this is no longer relevant and should be archived.
Comment 1•17 years ago

This should be migrated, although there is already some Rhino content on MDC, so it should be confirmed whether or not that material would be duplicate.
Comment 2•17 years ago
|
||
Does this mean the home page for Rhino will be MDC? Rhino's an active project and should keep it's home page at mozilla.org imo.
Comment 3•17 years ago
|
||
The Rhino project would be on wikimo, while documentation for Rhino would be on MDC. That's how most projects are done.
Comment 4•17 years ago
|
||
Understood. Thank you for the clarification.

Any project is welcome to host pages on www.mozilla.org (see for example the Calendar project). If Rhino wants to keep content on www.mozilla.org, that's certainly fine with me. If they'd like to move to wiki.m.o or somewhere else, that's fine too. If they do stay, I'd prefer that we move the projects pages to the projects directory with the other projects.

Did we check with the Rhino development community? There are still some of them :-) and they may well not be very closely connected to the project core. So, for example, they may not have seen David's blogpost.

I also sent an email out to explain what we're doing with www.mozilla.org to put things in context in case they missed any of the archiving discussion on planet.

A redirect was recently added that redirected all content in the Rhino directory on www.mozilla.org to the main Rhino page on MDC.
http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozilla.org/trunk/rhino/.htaccess?view=log&pathrev=50999
Considering this, are there any objections to removing these redirected pages? Note, they'll still be available in SVN as well as the www-archive.mozilla.org site for reference.
Comment 9•16 years ago

With redirecting all entries on www.mozilla.org to the main Rhino page on MDC there is now no way to download Rhino (the download link on the main Rhino MDC page redirects back to the main Rhino MDC page). I'd also avoided putting the main download page on MDC because of the potential for abuse. Do other projects worry about this?
I'm just reading about this now--you're right that we're not on the main mozilla.org discussions. What mailing lists should we have been on to avoid this disruption to our users? Can you point to "David's blogpost"?
Also, please don't delete the other content until I've had a chance to migrate it.
Thanks for your work on it.

Re comment #9, I backed out the redirect since it's causing problems with Rhino downloads.
In terms of putting the download page on MDC or somewhere else, I think this varies widely by project. If you'd like to keep the downloads on www.mozilla.org (or keep all of the Rhino pages there) you're certainly welcome to do that. My only concern is getting unowned and unmaintained pages off the site.
In terms of this change, it was made a few days ago and I saw it was done by someone with a 'nb' email and I had assumed it referred to Norris Boyd. You can see the history for the .htaccess file here:
http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozilla.org/trunk/rhino/.htaccess?view=log
In general, if you'd like to monitor changes to the Rhino files, you can subscribe to the Subversion feed for that directory.
http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozilla.org/trunk/rhino/?date=month&view=query&format=rss
Also, I've been emailing all site committers recently about the changes happening with the new site. I think I saw at least one or two of those emails to Norris bounce, so I apologize if those messages weren't getting through. I also blog about the site regularly, so feel free to keep an eye on posts here:

(And I modified the redirect because crussell in IRC was complaining that it redirected /rhino/foo to https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhinofoo which wasn't proper behavior.)

A reasonable guess, but actually that was someone else.

Great, thanks, I've added that to my reader.

Not sure what address you were using, my proper one is norrisboyd[at]gmail.com. I do still have my checkin account at nboyd%atg.com, but that's an obsolete address.

Thanks.
New site design looks great, by the way.
What's your recommendation about where content should live? I think I'd like to keep mozilla.org/rhino for the main page and http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/download.html for downloads, and have everything else on MDC. I've had that as a goal to migrate to that point for a while but haven't had enough time to make it happen.
And this is all in SVN now? Last I updated the non-MDC Rhino pages (probably March) this was still in CVS. Looks like I need to apply for access as per https://wiki.mozilla.org/SVN.

Content living there is fine (though I imagine David prefers /projects/rhino as do I). We can setup any redirects needed to MDC.
As for SVN, we've recently made the switch from CVS to SVN. You already *should* have access using key-based authentication. It it doesn't work, file a bug for access and say you previously had CVS webtree access and need the SVN bit turned on.
Details on accessing mozilla.org via SVN are here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla.org/How_to_Work_with_Site#Using_Subversion
You can also use the general SVN wiki page for more information.

Yes, I was using nboyd%atg.com since that was what was showing up in the commit history for the site.

That sounds reasonable. As Sam mentions though, ideally the Rhino content would live in the Projects directory along with the other project related content on the site.

You should be all good to start using the new repository, but feel free to ping me on IRC or email me directly if you have any problems accessing the Rhino files in SVN.

Great. Glad you like it :)

David, reassigning to you, but just for some insight:
MDN has created: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino
I'd like to move all Rhino content off of mozilla.org to this destination before the end of February.
Do you know who I would ask to help do this? Also, once on MDN, does this still need to move to the wiki archive?

Hannes, thanks for joining the conversation.
Background: This bug has been open for just over 3 years, and we've reached a critical point where we need to have a plan for retiring this content off of mozilla.org locked down by Friday, February 17, 2012. Mozilla.org will be relaunching in a few short weeks as canonical entry point for projects, but no longer the host of project documentation.
The good news is that this content has already been migrated and lives at:
http://www-archive.mozilla.org/rhino & https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino_documentation
Downloads also live at https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino_downloads_archive
The open question is where would you like the redirects from http://www.mozilla.org/rhino to go?
At a later date, we'll add a link from a new /projects page that will be located at http://www.mozilla.org/projects to that end destination as well.
Thanks for weighing in on the open redirect question!

Thanks for adding me to this bug.
I'm fine with redirecting mozilla.org/rhino to https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino. Like Norris, I had some concerns about people messing with the download link - would it be possible to restrict editing on the main and download pages?
But anyway, being able to edit pages via browser instead of going through SVN more than compensates for these concerns.
Comment 21•14 years ago
|
||
We can indeed restrict who can edit. Just point me to the pages in question and tell me the MDN username(s) of the people that should be able to edit.
Comment 22•14 years ago
|

Great! I think the pages that should be protected are these:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/RhinoDownload
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino_downloads_archive
These should be editable by hannesw and Norrisboyd. Those are the MDN usernames I could find - Attila or anybody else on the CC list, please speak up if you want to be added.

I've restricted editing of those three pages to a new "Rhino" user group, of which currently only hannesw and Norrisboyd are members. I can add other people to that group as needed.

Steven,
We're good to go, retire (purge from mozilla.org) and redirect to https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino
Thanks!

Planning to set up the following redirects:
http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/download.html -> https://developer.mozilla.org/en/RhinoDownload
http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/doc.html -> https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino_documentation
http://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino_help -> https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino/Community
http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/ -> https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Rhino
(this last rule will apply to any other URL that starts with http://www.mozilla.org/rhino/ and doesn't match any of the other above rules)
Make sense? Or should we just redirect everything in .org/rhino/ to the new home page on devmo?
Comment 26•14 years ago
|
||
+1 for more strategic redirecting, so wfm, thanks steven!
Comment 27•14 years ago

Those redirects look good to me. Redirecting other pages to the new home page is also fine.
Thanks to everyone for your efforts and good luck with the site relaunch!

Redirects setup in trunk. Will have to wait until this is in production before I actually remove the pages from the .org site, since that happens immediately in production.
Comment 29•13 years ago
|
||
Any news on whether/when these redirects will become effective? I'm just in the process of releasing a new version of Rhino and I'd prefer not to have to update the old mozilla.org/rhino pages (I'd either have to gain the required authorization or ask Norris to make the updates).
So having these redirects would be very convenient.

Those are merged to stage with r108158 and production in r108159.
They should appear online in a few minutes.
