If one attempts to change the incoming location for an email address there is a warning message that all emails present in that account will be lost as a result.
This is very bad news. You should allow all messages to be transferred to the new selection.
By the way this happens even if the new selection is the same email box as that being modified.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.go to 'Advanced Account Settings' for a mailbox
2.click a radio button to change the location
3.click on 'OK'
Actual Results:
all messages were lost

Expected Results:
messages should be transfered to the new mailbox

With Thunderbird the lost emails can be recovered by re-instating the original mailbox but that information cannot be found anywhere.

I think this bug is about the Advanced Account Settings (POP account settings | server settings | advanced).
Status: RESOLVED → UNCONFIRMED
Resolution: DUPLICATE → ---
Summary: Loss of Messages when location of mailbox is changed → Loss of Messages when location of mailbox is changed in POP Advanced Account Settings
Both are the same dialogs, it would be stupid to "fix" one and not the other.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW

Summary: Loss of Messages when location of mailbox is changed in POP Advanced Account Settings → Offer to copy/move messages if the location of mailbox is changed in POP Advanced Account Settings
They are? I think bug 339564 is about the "Local Directory" which you can only browse path for. This isn't.
Kurt, there are steps missing (at least) between 1 and 2.

Please restate STR with all clicks and actions taken. And also, please be more specific about WHICH radio button with respect to "click a radio button to change the location"

1. From the Tools menu select Account Settings
2. In the left hand pane highlight Server Settings
3. In the middle of the right hand pane click the Advanced Button
4. Click the Radio Button for Inbox for Different Account
5. Click on OK

Actual Results:
all messages were lost

Expected Results:
messages should be transfered to the new mailbox
Kurt, what do you mean by messages being lost? That is not the case in current TB. The warning appearing clearly states the existing messages will not be accessible (meaning just hidden, not lost) and that if you need them you should first move them manually to the new account. Why do you think they are lost? Was the wording in the dialog different when you reported this bug?
Version: unspecified → 3.0
It is a long time ago that I reported this bug.
I do not normally use this transfer method. I was just testing TB facilities.
I do not have time right now to try to replicate the procedure as I lost too much time on the last occasion recovering the emails.

I'll take your word for it that the bug is not a problem anymore.
