When using TB under KDE (3.5 or 4.1) I cannot drag/drop or copy/paste an image directly into the message composition window. I _can_ do this from Firefox, and according to Mozillazine (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_complex_mails_with_inline_images) TB should support it.

After doing tests, it turns out that e.g. integration between Firefox and Konqueror regarding drag/drop works OK, and I also can copy an image from Ksnapshot to the clipboard and paste it into OOorg writer. So it is not just a Qt integration thing.

I use TB a lot for work, and I need to embed images into messages frequently. So directly being able to copy/paste instead of doing it the awkward way via the 'Insert Image' dialog in TB would be a huge time saver for me....

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open new message window in TB
2.Grab image with Ksnapshot and copy to clipboard
3.Go to new message window in TB and Edit > Paste or Ctrl-V or Shift-Ins. Nothing happens

OR:

1.Open a new message window in TB
2.Open Dolphin and go to a folder with images
3.Drag the image to the new message window in TB
Actual Results:
When copying pasting, nothing happens
When dragging: the filepath is pasted into the message window, eg
file:///home/MyUser/images/file0001.jpg

Expected Results:
The image should be displayed in the message window and be embedded in the message when I send it.

Are you talking about Thunderbird 2.0.0.* or 3.0b*?

> Nothing happens

This should paste in PNG by default on Thunderbird 3.0, pasting images from the clipboard does not work in the current 2.0 branch releases.

> 1.Open a new message window in TB
> 2.Open Dolphin and go to a folder with images
> 3.Drag the image to the new message window in TB

> When dragging: the filepath is pasted into the message window, eg
> file:///home/MyUser/images/file0001.jpg

When using drag-and-drop, a reference to the file or web site is actually transferred, not the image itself (that's a difference to copy/paste). Something might have gone wrong here and that reference was considered text rather than an actual link to a file.

From your description, it appears to me that you were using 2.0, thus please try in 3.0 with a test profile if everything works there.

http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/3.0b1/ or nightly builds.
Yes, in 3.0b1 it works splendidly, both copy/paste and drag/drop. Thanks!

Now, the million dollar question is: when can I start using 3.0 without it eating my children? ;)

Ah well, I'll be patient! Thanks a mil guys!
You can use 3.0b1 "at your own risk" already if you don't want to wait, but expect to run into a few things not quite working yet (which is why it's a beta version). Currently, the final release of 3.0 is expected during Q1 2009.

Well, I think I'll wait.... I really need my mail client to be reliable _and_ I need Lightning. But TB3 is going to kick some real A** if you ask me...
