Tested on build 20000728(29)08 M18. On 2000072108 in was not perfect, but
acceptible and known issue, but from (for me) 2000072808 it is awful...

ezh@infonet.ee (Eugene Savitsky) browser scrolling? tree scrolling (mailnews
threadpane / bookmarks, etc) Could you test this with a current M18 build and
maybe give us a testcase or some performance numbers.

I don't see a problem on 080204 Win98. Not a processor problem, because i've got
a PII 400 MHz with 128 MB. As Asa said, try on a current build. May have been
low memory on your computer at the time.

Build 2000080208 on WinME. Scrolling
at http://f1live.com/setup-demo/office.en.html is very slow.
PS Just noticed - slow with PgUp/PgDn and wheel mouse (where is set to
scroll 3 lines at once)... So sounds like some repaint problem?
Summary: Scrolling is very slow and uses up to 92% of CPU → Scrolling is very slow

The page scrolls fine - but it does freeze for a second or two immediately after
opening it. Is this what you are reporting?

When I reported this bug I had ATI Rage Pro card, now I installed a TNT1 16Mb

I'll try to reinstall this ATI on monday and then I'll say smth.

So, now I can confirm very slow PgUp/PgDn scrolling on 2 machimes with 1 with
ATI Rage Pro, 2 with ATI Mach64 (but on all computers are 2560 driver for Rage
Pro)...
Can anyone confirm it?
PS WinMe and Win98 SE RUS.

Silly question: do you have the correct drivers installed for the ATI cards? How
does scrolling speed compare with, say, 4.x?
Reporter | ||
Comment 10•24 years ago

To: Simon Fraser
Currently on my home machine I have ATI Rage Pro 8Mb AGP card with ver.2560
drivers from ATI (using WinME).
Scrolling everywhere is normal, but on some pages Mozilla redraws the scrolled
page so slow (with tables?)... I'll continue testing and figuring our pages on
which this occurs. I'll try latest M17 build and M18.
PS Which software can make a video you can see what's going on?
PPS Installing Riva TNT or TNT2 resolves this problem.

It's strange, but I see it on my machine (Linux, XFree86 3.3.6, ATI Rage PRO)
too
I noticed slowdown when scrolling in trees with arrow keys.
With older S3 graphic card it was faster
I'll try X 4.0.

On 2000081504 winNT (ATI video card) the scrolling is OK on given URLs but it is
slow on this one:

Yep, that URL also scrolls slow for me. Like page is splitted for ~3 parts,

Try going to:
http://phpbuilder.com/
I am using a Matrox Millenium II with 4 meg ram (PCI card) with a PII 266 processor.
Try scrolling up and down continuously. It is so choppy for me, it is hardly
worth viewing the site in Mozilla at all.
It is Far better in IE5.01 sp1, however, admittedly, it is still slightly choppy
moving the scrollbar up and down continuously, but nowhere near as bad as
Mozilla is right now.
Done with build: 2000091212

Try this url... On TNT2 it is AWFUL SLOW... And there are tables...
Yesterday I also scrolled http://f1live.com/setup-demo/qualifying.en.html it is
practically unusable when I must scroll up/down the page many times... It take
1-2 sec to PgDn/PgUp this page...
Can someone repro it?

I just noticed:
I changed resolution from 1280*1024*32 to 800*600*32 and back to 1280*1024*32
and it works much quiker now.
I'll try to restart Mozilla now and reload all those pages.

Mozilla scrolls is very on pages with tables. But when I change the resolution
it scrolls normal, with reflows, but does not take a second to PgUp or PgDn.

I'm not sure if this is related to tables at all.
If you take a look at all of the mentioned sites, you will see that all of them
have a background picture specified in their body. In my experience, this slows
Mozilla down quite much.
I'll try to make a testcase.

Downloaded K-Meleon 0.4.
Noticed a huge scrolling speed difference between Mozilla and K-Meleon. And the
winner is not Mozilla...
Load the page http://rus.delfi.ee in both browsers and try to scroll it down/up
with PgDn/PgUp.
In Mozilla I see small reflows, but not in K-Meleon (I don't saw the reflows in
Moz untill I used K-Meleon and it is very niticeble). I'm on Duron 1000Mhz with
Nvidia MX video.
Can anyone confirm? Any thoughts?

if this still a problem?
I don't see any problem with linux 2001091909 with none of the following pages
http://f1live.com/setup-demo/office.en.html, http://rus.delfi.ee/,
http://f1live.com/setup-demo/office.en.html
I have a P3-500 with TNT2-M64 card (no speed monster;), but of course linux drivers

using build 2001092103 on win2k (SP2) with a PII 266 and 4 meg Matrox Millenium
card, the differences in scrolling between IE5.5 (SP2) and Mozilla are small.
IE5.5 still comes in slightly ahead (percieved scroll speed), but it is not
overly significant. I tested a large number of url's mentioned in this bug
including the testcase. Looks like Mozilla has made some big gains in scroll speed!
I'm not sure how relevant this bug is anymore? Yes, Mozilla could get better,
but I think with general optimization, that will come anyway.

I still see the slow scrolling (there seen reflows). Duron 800, 512mb, GeForce2

Slow on PgUp/PgDn and wheel scrolling. But with wheel it reflows only when

Ok. I've got it.
1. You must set the resolution to 1600x1200.
2. Open the link
3. When you scroll down all is OK, but if you scroll up till the beginning of
the page (there are pictures!) and then the slowness (reflows begins).
4. They are also at 1280x1024, but the are almost invisible.
Tested with moz 2002022808.

Check out http://www.ntcompatible.com.
Scroll performance is unacceptable (Mozilla 1.0 RC1)!!!

I think it's a MAJOR bug 'cause it lasts so long
and affects user experience directly.

Sorry for not being accurate enough but this regression appeared first very
quickly after official 0.9.9 (a couple of days later). Some fixes have been made

is still very slow on my system (Windows 2000, build id 2002 05 30, ATI RAGE
MOBILITY-M PCI w/ 4M). However, I notice when pulling up View -> Page Info that
the last two images listed are 16,147 (!) pixels high. I don't know how this
would interact with Mozilla's reflow logic but those sizes really stick out like
a sore thumb.
